Varia Vision does not appear in Finder on Mac

On my iMac, the Varia Vision does not appear in Finder as an external USB drive, when I connect it directly to the computer via a USB cable. So Garmin Express cannot find it. Garmin support shipped me a new USB cable, but it still fails to connect. The Mac is running the latest High Sierra OS. However, the Vision does connect fine on a Windows 10 PC that I have, as well as a MacBook running the older El Capitain OS. What could be wrong with connecting on the iMac?

Furthermore, here is the USB info for the Vision from System Information on the iMac:

Product ID: 0x295e
Vendor ID: 0x091e (Garmin International)
Version: 5.09
Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
Location ID: 0xfd130000 / 7
Current Available (mA): 500
Current Required (mA): 500
Extra Operating Current (mA): 0

It is incomplete. Basically, it is not being recognized as an external drive. On the MacBook where it does work, it shows different information:

Product ID: 0x295e
Vendor ID: 0x091e (Garmin International)
Version: 5.09
Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
Location ID: 0x1a200000 / 1
Current Available (mA): 1000
Current Required (mA): 500
Extra Operating Current (mA): 0
Capacity: 8.5 MB (8,522,752 bytes)
Removable Media: Yes
Detachable Drive: Yes
BSD Name: disk1
Partition Map Type: Unknown

I have the same situation with Varia UT800 light on my iMac. RTL500 Works fine. Don't have PC or MacBook, so I didn't try that :)
  • It looks like I stumbled upon the solution. I removed the SAT SMART driver from my iMac (a third-party driver allowing me to check the SMART status of external drives). The Varia Vision now shows up as a Garmin drive when I plug it into the USB port. I don't know whether it's the Garmin or the SMART driver at fault, but the two apparently can't co-exist.
