Change a Varia Radar from RTL501 to RTL500 ?

Is there any way, by use of sw. to change the type on a Varia Radar. The reason why it should be changed is that the flashing model isn't allowed in some countries where solid light only is allowed.
  • I doubt it ... if you try to install RTL500 firmware on a RTL501, you may end up bricking it.
  • I'm interested why you're asking the question. The whole point of the two models was so the flashing model (I forget which is which) would only be sold in the countries where it was permitted. So if you live in a country where flashing lights are not allowed, the model you can buy should automatically be the correct one. Of course, you may have bought a light from another country and ended up with a flashing light where it's not permitted, but as long as you don't use the flashing mode, what's the problem?

I guess it could be you've ended up with a non-flashing model but want to 'convert' it to a flashing one, but that's not what I'm reading in your question.

Looking into http://gawisp.com/perry/edge/ there seems to be only one sw for the Varia Radar, so no differentiation btw. RTL500 and RTL501 wich leeds the thougt to there migt only be one sw and it works on both types and the type is set by sw.

NeilJonesOnline No you are right, it was not readable in my question, but you hit the needle :-) As the flashing model can be set to solid light as well, I am interested in converting my non flashing unit to be able to run solid or flash on demand. Even thoug a flashing back light is allowed in my country, it isn't possible to by the flashing model, probably caused by the small size of the marked in that country and it would be to expensive bying it online with the risk of added tax. etc.
  • Try taping lightly the power button. On my model, taping the power button changes the mode from flashing to solid and back.

PetrosK73 Thanks, but doesn't work on mine. I think your version is a RTL500 mine is a RTL501. I tried editing the outrun.inf file but it is not enough, to make it able to flash. :-(
  • JanGrevsen That's bad my friend. I guess Garmin have somehow hard coded the version in the units firmware.

Anybody with a RTL500 who could post the "GarminDevice.xml" file from their device ?
