Garmin Varia Radar whishlist

Hi guys,?

I use the Garmin varia Radar with a smartphone and the app IPBIKE.?

I can see on my screen how many cars is approaching me ,speed , time to arrive and the remaining meters. Of course I can set customized visual and audio alert .?

My question is:?

would be possible to know ,maybe whit a next future firmware update, which type of vehicle is coming (big...truck/bus medium...car/van small...Motorbike/bike)

I think would be very useful for everybody...it is very different if from behind is coming a motorbike or a truck

Thanks in advance for your support

  • A larger object will return a stronger signal to the unit and that in turn may be represnted as a larger dot on the screen. But this radar may not have the ability to detect "size".

If you really want to know what's coming up behind you....use a mirror.
  • I agree with ZuhMan... the radar is only a supplement to being aware of your surroundings.

Anyways, a Yugo will kill you just as dead as a Mac truck if it slams into you.
  • If I would had use a mirror I could buy it. I bought an expensive device for my safety..so if would be the possibility to detect the shape..for me will be very welcome....
    thanks

  • Perhaps what you are looking for, is a rear view camera for a bicycle but I don't know of any on the market right now. However, this is a perfect example of why you should research a product's capabilities before purchasing.

    Hello ZuhMan,

    thanks for your reply.?

I know very well what I've bought and I'm very satisfied about it, it's very useful for me (I use to ride about 20000km per year and most of them in the night)?

I don't think what I wish is a big stuff if the varia is able to do this...otherwise I will keep use it the same ;)

    Thanks?

  • Such a system would be of limited accuracy anyway. The radar is only able to detect the "reflectivity" of the approaching vehicle, not its size. A touring type motorbike may present a larger radar cross-section (RCS) than a streamlined sports car. I'd accept that generally, a big lorry would have a larger RCS than a moped, but you couldn't use the RCS to accurately categorise into small, medium and large, so you would just have lots of different size dots on the head unit which would only correspond to the RCS of the approaching vehicle, not its actual size.

There are rear view cameras available ... but, as far as I know, they only record and don't stream the video.
