RTL not showing ANY cars on Edge 520

So I took this out for my first ride today, 40 mi. Worked great for about 45 minutes, then I noticed it was not showing cars on the screen. The edge has the radar icon in the top right corner but will not register any vehicles.

I powered the tail light on and off..no luck. I disconnected the tail light from the 520 and repaired them...nothing.
I removed my saddle bag and stuck it in my jersey for the last 25 miles and it still wouldn't work. I stopped and watched the lights as the cars went by and it did blink brighter and faster as the cars approached so I assume the radar is working. The light is on the latest 3.4 fw.

Any tips? I cant find a single thread on this in the archives. Overall I'm very disappointed and thats not even talking about the audio ques that are inaudible...I was hoping I could use my bone conduction bluetooth headset for the notifications. The whole unit seems worthless, even if it did work lol.

    If it's actually connecting to the 520 but isn't showing alerts it could be a setting on the 520 or it could be you got a defective unit. Have you contacted Garmin support? Since it's a new unit they'll replace it if there's not a way to fix it.

    I have the same setup as you do and I've been mostly happy with mine. For the most part the alerts on my 520 are loud enough and it lets me know about cars well before I can hear or see them myself. Being able to use bluetooth headphones would be pretty cool, though my guess is Garmin won't do it since I doubt they would want to be encouraging people to use headphones while cycling (most probably wouldn't use bone conduction ones like you do).

    I haven't contacted support yet, they always tell you to reset all your devices, whatever. I'd rather try to find a fix on the forums, maybe downgrade to an older firmware. The current FW is a year old?

    Similar thing happened today

    I had a similar thing happen today with my edge 1000 explore. Both have been working great for months, but today after 30 minutes of normal operation (detections and display) edge started giving a beep about every 30 seconds after a while I realised no beep or display for following/ passing vehicles. I stopped and tried switching rtl off and on and disabled and re-enable radar in edge setting, I didn't want to restart edge as I was following a course and wanted a continuous time. Edge reported that light and radar were connected and I noticed that the light pattern changed with approaching vehicle, I think this mean the radar is operating but edge not displaying. The 30second beeps had also stopped so I continued ride. I will need to investigate further!

    Repeated failure

    Hi,

    This problem where after a period of time radar detections have no beep alert or display dot. This has happened now on a number of rides. I'm pretty sure radar is functioning correctly as the light pattern changes as vehicles approach. It's the alert and display of the edge explore 1000 that isn't doing its job. On each ride where it has failed everything was performing correctly but after a period of time the problem occurs. I'm not sure but it seems to be related to either a phone disconnected - reconnected and or going off course when following a course. It seems like these announcements causes the system to lose the radar detection announcements. This issue is making the radar so unreliable it's not worth having it anymore.

    I am experiencing the same issue with my Edge 1000 and the RTL. Normally both the radar and the light show as connected,. When this occurs, the radar shows connected, but does not display car dots on the screen, and as others have said the actual rear light still behaves correctly. However, the light network is lost, and if you go to the light under sensors, and show details there is a question mark displayed. The only way to recover is to stop the activity on the Edge, power cycle the edge, and then you can resume the activity and everything works correctly again. This happens at least once per ride, since the most recent Edge firmware update. I am going to do a master reset on my edge to see if that solves this issue and will report back.
  • Just as an update, I did a master reset of my Edge 1000 ( after backing up and then restoring files and settings) and the problem is gone.

    I tried this but the issue still persists! I very sure it associated with phone disconnects.
