Anyone tried Varia Vision for Running?

Always feel an AR display of my running metric in real time would be better than having to look down at my watch constantly.

I'm not a cyclist and I noted this device is only marketed for cycling, but I'm wondering if anyone has tried it for running. I guess there might be more head motion which could make the display move a lot and get out of focus, but not sure. Looks like it will pair with my new Forerunner 935 as well.

I've read reports that the constant wobbling of the varia image before your eyes and against the visible backdrop can cause dizziness. Considering this is a very individual issue your milage may vary.

I did indeed try and that's exactly how I found it. It's cool to have metrics always available but unfortunately the wobbling make them really hard to read, plus the weight asymmetry on the glasses is a lot more annoying than when cycling. I think a future Varia Vision 2 should have the battery and electronics as a small separate unit with a thin cable connecting to a super light, larger display. Having said that, I love my VV when biking and skiing!

I don't have the Vision, but would like to know if the Vision displays the screen of any activity you are using? I assume so based on you using it for cycling, skiing, and trying running. Thanks for the info.

On the Edge (I have the 1000) you can customize the Vision screens specifically. On the Fenix 5X I could not find how to do it: you get the same screens as on the watch for that activity. You can however scroll between them so you might, say, have screen 1 on the watch and screen 3 on the Vision.

I love it for running, just a pity I have to take my Edge 1000 with me as my 920XT is not compatible with Varia Vision gadget. I don't experience any kind of dizziness. The image is clear and sharp and no issues when running in the sunlight.... Of course the harder you run the more difficult it becomes to read the metrics but this is the same with a watch... Also road visibility remains high no distraction or obstruction.

Ok, I made the step and moved to the Forerunner 935 that has support for connecting to the Varia Vision. So far I'm pretty happy with the result. At least much more comfortable than having to run with the Edge 1000.

It was a tough decision as I really love my 920. The device is working perfectly but unfortunately didn't support the Garmin Vision.

    Best regards,

    Hi clamic,

I'm running with the Stryd Pod and using Varia Vision but so far I have no idea how to configure, if possible, the data fields for the Varia Vision and to include the Stryd power value.

  • As far as I know you cant edit the data fields on the varia vision if you use the forerunner 935.it just uses the same data fields as the watch.unfortunately the power fields remain empty.I already wrote to garmin two times but never got an answer(5 weeks ago!)
Support by Garmin seems to suck

Humm... so if I understand you correct, normally when editing the data fields on the 935 watch it should take this setup over on the Garmin Varia Vision?
I thought, the Varia Vision uses pre-defined data fields that are different when used with the bike GPS devices like the Edge 1000.

I hope you get an answer soon from Garmin support... however I think as the Varia Vision is not such a huge succes, maybe something newer will come out soon and the Varia Vision development will become obsolete.

Many people doubt the quality of what they will see when using the Varia Vision, I can only say I was very pleased to see the result after I bought it. Of course as it is not that cheap a lot of people will not take the risk to find out how they will experience it.
As my eyes are getting older the varia vision was a good solution... However for biking it is more comfortable and efficient (no interference of sunlight) and also the navigation feature makes it very valuable.
