I'm seeing some threads that talk about using Bontrager lights (mostly headlights?) in place of Garmin lights, and saying that the Bontrager remote can control Garmin lights.
I have a Garmin Edge 1000. I bought the Varia Combo package plus a second tail light, so I own the Varia remote, the Varia headlight, and two Varia tail lights. I can have turn signals and brake lights with the Edge 1000 and the pair of tail lights - this seems like a really cool feature.
The Varia headlight puts out less light than Bontrager 700RT, but has a longer rated battery capacity (2.5 hrs vs 1.75 at high power). The Bontrager headlight is less than half the price of the Varia, but I already spent the money....
I've only done a few experimental rides in the dark (pre-dawn). I know the turn signal feature works (I can tap the Edge screen to select a right or left turn, and they auto cancel as I straighten out after a turn), and that the headlight changes its aim based on speed, aiming farther forward as speed increases. I sort of decided I didn't need the remote on my bike.
Now I have some questions.
Should I consider using the Varia remote to control my headlight separately from the tail lights, or continue to control all using the Edge 1000?
Does anyone know if the turn signal feature is useful if I have the tail lights in blink mode? (I've been using them in a solid mode, so that turn signal blinks will be visible.)
Should I consider purchasing the Bontrager remote?
Should I consider buying the Bontrager headlight?
And finally, a pricing question: The Bontrager combo kit seems to cost more than the individual items that are included - am I missing something?
