Bluetooth connection issues using Radar rear light

I have the Varia radar rear light connected to an Edge 1000, the problem I am having is that the radar unit causes the bluetooth connection between the 1000 and my phone to drop out. You get a beep from the 1000 saying 'Phone Disconnected' and then a few seconds later another beep and message saying 'Phone Connected'. When I first had the RTL then this did not happen but now it is happening all the time, I'm not sure if this a combination of different software versions, I am currently running the following:

RTL: v3.4
Edge 1000: v11.2
Phone: Sony Z5, Android 6.0.1

I have done some experiments and it is definitely the RTL that is causing the issue. I did an hour on the turbo trainer the other day, for the first 30 minutes I had the RTL on and had 15 bluetooth drop outs, I then switched the RTL off and had no issues for the next 30 minutes. I went out on the road yesterday and for the first 15 min or so I had the RTL on and had repeated bluetooth issues, I switched it off and then had no problems for the next 2 hours.

I've tried forgetting the pairing on the 1000 and phone and then re-paired them but this made no difference. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions?

I've just had an email from Garmin, they have managed to replicate the problem and are promising a fix in the '2nd quarter' of the year.
  • I also have this problem, I'm posting here in the hope that I get a notification that it is fixed soon, I'm currently using software version 11.10

When I switched on my Edge 1000 today, it updated itself to v13.0 firmware. I've just completed a 2.5 hour ride and had no bluetooth drop-outs. It looks like the v13.0 firmware has fixed the issue.
  • Edge 520 with latest firmware (12.10)
    Varia RTL 500
    LG G4 connected with Bluetooth

Having the same issue with random 'Phone disconnected' and 'Phone connected' messages.
Is there any fix for this? Is Garmin working on a fix?
  • I'm STILL having the same problem. Have not used my radar in a while so today I decided to ride with it. Varia Radar updated this morning to 3.7 and Edge 520 updated the other day to 12.3. Using a Sony Z5 Compact on Android 7.1.1

Today with the Radar paired I got constant disconnects (same as before) and had about 20 of them in a 10 mile stretch. Removed Radar from the Edge and for the next 10 miles I had zero BT disconnects.

Connected Radar again and for the next 5 miles I had constant BT disconnects. Removed Radar again and the final 14 miles I had no BT disconnects.

I can't believe that after all this time, and with Garmin being able to reproduce the problem that it has not been fixed. Unbelievable!

Back in the junk box goes the Radar.
  • The latest beta software for 520 says in the notes that it fixes the Bluetooth issue when using Varia, I have not tried it yet I will wait for a general release, but I hope it works. That will mean it has taken a FULL YEAR for them to fix this issue, at that rate they might have fixed HALF the bugs with the 520 before they release new hardware and drop development for the 520. Who knows they might even release an update that introduces even more bugs and unwanted annoying features that you can't disable.

Great hardware Garmin, but you have been so badly let down by your software team for so long that I bought my wife a Wahoo as I could not let her suffer the glitchy 520.

While I'm at it why don't you just drop Garmin Connect altogether, does anyone WANT to use? All the other services leave it for dead.
