Varia Vision does not connect with Edge 520

I got the Varia Vision for Christmas, but have been extremely frustrated ever since:
  • Vision doesn't pair effectively with the 820. It shows the prompt to hold close to the 820, then shows a prompt that says it's connected and asks me to "Acknowledge," without any clue of how to do this (on the 820? On the Vision? HOW???)
  • Even when the 820 shows that it's connected with the Vision in the Sensor list, the Vision continues to display zeros for data, and incorrect time and temperature readings (91F, 3:59PM, even though the 820 shows 11:03AM.
  • Changes to the "Display Settings" section of the 820 Sensors UI for the Vision have no effect.
  • After a few seconds, the Vision unit disconnects, and then cycles through the connection and Acknowledge loop again, with exactly the same zero data displays.
  • I'd love to try updating the Vision firmware (the 820 is running the latest firmware), but the Garmin Express utility on my Mac fails to detect the Vision unit, so this is impossible.

  • I can’t help you with any of your problems, but the bit about “Acknowledge” is not actually a problem. You can dismiss that display by swiping on the touch panel of the Varia Vision itself. But it you don’t, it dismisses itself automatically after a few seconds.
  • Make sure that both the Edge and HMD have the latest software installed.

    For the 520 that is build 10.00, for the Vision (HMD) that is 3.20.

    Vision is running 3.20, and my Edge 820 is running 5.20, which Garmin Edge claims is the latest version.

    As I stated in my original post, I'm using the latest firmware but the Varia Vision still won't connect properly. Emails to [email][email protected][/email] have not been answered.

    What options do I have vs. just giving up and returning the product?
  • Your only real option is to try a reset of the the Edge so that it clears all the settings and allows you to repair with the HMD and rebuild the training pages.

    You could try a reset of the HMD first as that does nor clear any of your your settings.

    Resetting the HMD
    1.Press power key to turn on device
    2.Countdown 5 seconds after first vibration (Display on)
    3.Press and hold power key until unit vibrates
    4.Keep holding power key until unit vibrates again
    5.Release power key, unit performs non-vol clear and reboots.

    Edge reset
    Non-prompted Non-Vol Clear - Clears NV and deletes all FIT files including Activities, Courses, Workouts.


    • Turn device off
    • Hold Lap/Reset and Start/Stop
    • Press and release the power button
    • Continue to hold only Lap/Reset and Start/Stop
    • Release Lap/Reset and Start/Stop when the Garmin Logo is cleared
    • The unit will then restart and clear non-vol
