Next Generation VARIA Radar

Does anyone have any ideas on when the next generation VARIA Radar may be released? Or how long the lifecycle of these items is likely to be? Being a Generation 1 device I would expect an update reasonably quickly to incorporate all the learnings. Or is it a case of no competition so no need to rush it?

I am disappointed the VARIA Taillight is so much brighter than the Radar and am hoping they improve the output on a future update. It would also be nice if the unit became less wide and had a longer battery runtime (at least to match an EDGE).
  • Until there's a technological advance in batteries, I doubt there will be much of a change to the Varia unit. A brighter taillight is going to require additional battery capacity.

To me, the Varia is a great product for the radar alone. I have a "real" taillight and so I use the Varia taillight as just a supplement. I'd be just as happy if it had no taillight at all. I think the taillight is pretty close to worthless.
  • Though I have only had my radar a couple of weeks it seems pretty bright to me. I think I will be happy to use it on its own.

That is exactly what I was thinking. I just did want to occupy all of my seat post with lights. Pity they don't have a seat rail mount for the VARIA.

On the topic of brightness, the standard VARIA Tail Light is about twice the brightness. LED's don't use a huge amount of power and battery are very energy dense these days that even if they added 3 or 4mm to the thickness of the unit they could accommodate the brighter LEDs and provide longer runtime. Wishful thinking anyway...
