Target fixation

Hi folk,

I'm a user of the Varia Radar and RDU (so just that, no edge or Forerunner connected to the unit). After getting the unit, I had a few close calls with cars and thought: sheesh I'm glad I had my radar, just how much worse would that have been without it?

And then I started thinking... What if—somehow—the radar was making the problem worse... anecdotally I hadn't really had any close calls before getting my radar, and got it out of extreme caution. So I started looking into this, and finally found a reason that could be contributing to the problem:

Target fixation is an attentional phenomenon observed in humans in which an individual becomes so focused on an observed object (be it a target or hazard) that they inadvertently increase their risk of colliding with the object.

I feel that the feedback mechanism (where the flashes get brighter or the unit brightness increases) perhaps increases the chance of target fixation occurring.

So now, not having an edge unit, how do I turn the flashing lights off?

You can do it with an Edge 820 or 1000 (I'm not sure about the 520), I don't know if it's possible with the RDU, but I doubt it.
