Varia mounting options

I'm seeing no reason the Varia can't be mounted directly behind the seat - attached to the seat rails, instead of the seat post. On my bike the Varia mounted to the seat post takes up all the real estate behind my bike, anything else I try to put back there blocks the radar.

Mounting high behind the seat would let me stash a spare tube in a saddle bag UNDER the Varia, use the seat post for a Fly6 or alternate blinkie, or put a low profile container on top of a rear rack.

All the mounts that I can find that enable this are for Go-Pros, so the solution is to buy a GoPro seat rail mount, then buy a Go Pro to Garmin Varia adaptor.

That's $55+ I'll spend to mount the Varia that Garmin's missing out on. I can't be the only one with this issue. Would they consider manufacturing a seat rail mount for the Varia Radar?

Are any Trek owners with the RT mount under the saddle using the following successfully with a Varia 515?

I just go my Varia and ended up ordering a couple of things from Amazon to solve this very problem:

I also grabbed some screws for the extensions since they don't come with any (standard GoPro screws).

Why not just use the smallest circular loop connector through a Topeak rear bag? I have done that for two bikes and appears to be a solid solution, did others try this and it failed?

I did use the ‘closethegap’ mudguard to mount my varia radar, but unfortunately this mudguard breaks too easily. I cannot use it longer and I think it’s too expensive to buy a new one with the same risk.

This is how I made my own mount for my Fizik saddle.

From a plastic paint stirrer I made my own mount. An old garmin quickrelease, another piece of plastic and some tiewraps.

I adjusted the dismensions with a stanleyknife, with a piece of hot metal I sharply bent the plastic, drilled two small holes for the screws, adjusted the quick release connector, spraypainted it, and voila. This new mount easily slides in the slot of the saddle and remains stuck in this slot. To avoid lost during a ride, I secured it with a tiewrap to the saddlebars. (Yes, these are rusty due to beach biking).

I just tried this, one small Garmin rubber band through the Topeak loop and over all four corners of a Garmin stem mount. It seems pretty tight and shouldn’t fall off. Thanks for the tip.

Mark, thank you for this great post. I used a variation of it and it works great! I bought a downspout strap, some heavy duty velcro and a wrap around velcro strap for extra protection. A very painless solution to the problem! Thank you!
