Varia Radar and Audio Prompts

Been using the radar with my 520 for a year, and it's always worked very well. Recently switched to the 820 and I'm using the navigation audio alerts (paired with iPhone/GC mobile), but unfortunately the radar alerts are not transmitted through the phone app. I find the alerts from the 820 are difficult to hear, especially when I'm getting audio alerts via an earpiece.

Anyone know of a way to have the radar alerts also transmit with the other audio prompts into the earpiece (via GC app)?
  • For clarification, the Edge 820 does have the ability to provide an audible alert when the Radar detects an approaching Vehicle. To ensure this feature is turned on in the Edge 820 go to the Edge 820 Main Menu, select Settings, select Sensors, select the Radar, select Sensor Details, select Alert Settings, Select Tones On.
  • wrist vibration ?

IMHO,the audio prompts are not audible with my Edge 1000, but i ride wearing at the same time a 735 XT .
Both are paired with the Varia radar.

Unfortunately, i'm not able to get a "wrist vibration alert" , with any setting of the 735 and edge.

    Is it possible ?

    Thanks

it's not between the watch and edge you set up this feature! if the 735 is compatible with Varia devices, pair it to the Varia Radar directly (just like any other sensor) !

... on the other hand, nothing can be done for devices that are not compatible with Varia, so check the compatibility list for your watch.
  • Thank you for your quick answer
Perhaps was i not clear enought but i wrote: Both (1000 and 735) are paired with the Varia radar.

735 is fully compatible with varia, but no setting in 735 menu varia setting to get " a wrist alert vibration", it's rather regrettable.
  • Where is this SAFETY FEATURE ???

I've been trying to get the Varia to transmit the tones through my headset as well and was frankly gobsmacked to find this thread confirming that it can't be done. Like others have mentioned, the tones from the 820 are inaudible above about 20mph and frankly they're pretty quiet at lower speeds. The 820 can provide me with other in-ear tones and turn-by-turn directions none of which are as important as the beep telling me that a vehicle is approaching from behind.

Come on Garmin! This is a SAFETY FEATURE for heaven's sake. Please sort it out!
  • radar does indeed beep when it detects something approaching fast (10Kph faster than your speed) but alerts are not carried through earpiece if you are connected to a phone... (sound of edge 820 can be difficult to hear if there is a lot of wind)

note that it won't beep for every car though: it won't beep again if cars keep appearing at a close interval, and cars coming up slower won't be detected at all.

I think it's a good behaviour: this forces me to keep paying attention if there is some traffic, but will wake me up when I've been riding on a quiet road for a while and a car approaches fast.
Actually, this is not correct. I called Garmin customer support and asked them to clarify how the Varia radar is supposed to work with my 735xt and let them know that there seem to be two schools of thought, yours above and the more common opinion that it is supposed to beep whenever a car is approaching, regardless of the difference in speed. The guy asked around among a few other customer support reps and noted that the same confusion existed among them. I asked him to email me about this lack of consensus among the customer support reps. By the time he emailed me, they had resolved their confusion and they now agreed that it is supposed to beep whenever a car is approaching, regardless of the speed of the approaching vehicle. BUT, one needs to have the updated watch software AND the updated software on the radar unit itself. Once I updated the software on my Varia radar, this is indeed how my unit is now working.

I still wish i could make the beep louder and the vibration more pronounced. It would be ideal if they would program this to work in conjunction with an app like Ride With GPS so that you could also get a loud audible alert similar to the turn-by-turn directions on such apps.

  • I just purchased a Varia RTL515 and I use it with a Garmin Edge 1000.  When I used it for the first time I could not hear any tones from my Edge 1000 when a car was approaching.  After doing some research, I downloaded from the app store a Garmin Varia app to my iphone.  I run the iphone app independently from my Garmin Edge and the tones come through loud and clear from my phone.  Both my Edge and my iphone sinc seamlessly with the Varia.  The app also allows alerts to be done by vibration.  This new phone app works great.

  • What's the name of the app?

  • The name of the app is Varia and it is made by Garmin.

  • You need the RTL515/516 for use with the app as the radar pairs to the phone of BLE.
