Varia Radar and Edge 1000 8.30 - How is the deceleration feature supposed to work

Recently updated to 8.30 on the Edge 1000. Now there is a setting for deceleration in the Varia Radar sensor details.
How is it supposed to work? I did a few brake tests with this feature enabled but couldn't see any difference on the Radar, the LEDs were neither brighter nor did more LEDs light up. I also tried it with light mode set to off expecting the LEDs to turn on when I brake. But nothing happened.
Does this feature require a Radar update that is not yet in place?

AFAIK, this feature is only available on the TL 300/301 not the RTL 500/501 models

So maybe I bug that I can see / select it at all? This setting has not been there prior to 8.30

Which setting are you referring to?. I looked into the settings for Lights and Radar and I didn't notice any changes from the previous firmware. Could you please be more specific?.

Maybe this is RTL-501 specific (either the planned? feature or the bug)? RTL-501 is similar to RTL-500 bus has no flashing mode at all.
    See screenshot:
  • I stand corrected. I previously didn't go into the Lights>Radar menu...just Lights. I have the RTL500 and it shows the same option as yours. I will test this in a few days and report back.
  • I was able to test it today and got the same results. No increase in light intensity during deceleration in any light mode (including Off). Maybe it's a planned functionality for the RTL units in the future?

I hope you are correct. It would be more useful and really great if Garmin would provide proper information with the updates.

This is supposed to work. I have the same thing with the radar and rear tail light (actually 2 of them for turn signals)...both don't get brighter while braking with the feature enabled on the Edge 520.

Here is a video from the Garmin booth at CES:

Looks like Garmin has a bug to fix.

PS - The "motion activated" feature of the headlight, tail lights (2), or radar doesn't do anything either. I left my bike motionless while all three lights we're on for over 30 minutes...and they all stayed on (using the "auto" setting of the light network).
