Edge 1000 + Varia Radar => how to change LED mode

I'm running an Edge 1000 with FW 8.10 and a Varia Radar with FW 3.4. The Varia Radar is brand new and so I didn't test it with any other device or an older FW-version on the Edge.
I want to change the LED-mode (steady to flashing) but I don't know how. The Varia Manual mentions to go so Sensors -> Light Network and select the corresponding option. But I don't have "Light Network" in the Sensors menu. The Varia Radar is listed as single sensor and I can go to its details and change for example alert tones (on/off) but not the LED mode.
I also tried to view the battery-state under "About" but it always says "New". When adding the battery-state datafield under Light Network to a datapage I only get a battery-icon with a question mark..
The radar feature works as expected, so the edge can definitely communicate with the Varia Radar.

In DC Rainmakers review I also read that it should be possible to change light mode by pressing the button on the Radar. But this also does not work. While pressing the button it switches from two bright LEDs to all LEDs glowing dim. A long press turns the Radar off, a short press does not change anything.

I tried to do a Factory Reset on the Edge but this did not help.

On the radar unit, once switched on with a long press of about 2 seconds, you should be able to switch modes with a short press. If this doesn't work (as you've written) then sounds like the unit may be faulty.

Here is how the Varia reacts to pressing the button:

I think I'll give Garmin Germany a call if this is normal. Here in Germany taillights with blinking mode are usually not allowed on the road. Maybe Garmin removed this feature for the European market?!

Someone on the German Garmin Forums answered that this is a RTL501 (and not RTL500). For the RTL501 this is intentional because it complies with the German/European rules for lights :(
Lets see if you can flash the other FW on it :D

The firmware seems to be identical :(
The 3.40 File is downloaded from here: http://download.garmin.com/software/VariaRadarTailLight_340.gcd does not look like a special Version for RTL-501.
  • Let me know if it works to use Firmware on 501.

I had no luck with experimenting with the firmware. But some guy on the German forums told me to 'double pair' the varia. At the second pairing it gets recognized as light and I can at least switch the LEDs on and off through the Edge.
    But still no flashing mode..

    Flash, no flash

My varia rtl500, long press - Switch on, short press, change to flash mode (4 dull flashing led), start ride - finish ride, check rear light and it has changed to constant mode (2 bright steady led), what wrong????.
