Second Ride with Varia Lights

Today, I wanted to start riding before sunrise, to see what the headlight would do for me. However, when I turned on my Edge 1000 and the three lights, I found that my Light Network had disappeared. I spent nearly 30 minutes getting all the lights paired with the Edge and ready to operate. By that time, I really didn't need the lights any longer. I did some experimenting though, and learned that if I have "Motion Activation" enabled, setting the headlight to "Off" really only turns it off until I start moving again. Eventually, I got the headlight turned off, and ride with only the taillights. At one point, the trail I was on goes under a freeway, so I turned the headlight back on. That process went faster than I thought it would, so I had the light on well before the place where I needed it.

Toward the end of my ride, I saw a message on the Edge that the headlight had disconnected from the light network. When I looked, the taillights were both in "dumb" mode; that is, they were enabled, but the only control I had was to remove them from the network.

So this afternoon, I called Garmin Support to see if I could learn how to keep my network "alive" from day to day. The person I spoke with, Zach, said I could leave the lights in "smart mode" - where the status light is blinking blue every few seconds without draining the battery much after charging. But I think I'll turn the lights off completely overnight.

Then, assuming I make it home with the light network working, I would pause my ride, go into Settings, Sensors, Lights, and disable the network. Then I could End Ride, Save the ride, and power off the Edge. The lights should all be in Smart Mode. I would recharge the lights and turn them off overnight. For my next ride with the lights, I should power on all three lights, put them in Smart Mode, then power on the Edge. When I tried this while on the phone with Garmin, the lights powered up a few seconds after the Edge came on.

Does anyone have additional tips for using the lights?
