810 and Varia Radar - Hands On feedback?

Hi

Has anyone used the 810 and Varia together yet?

I appreciate that the update for the 810 is recent, but been holding out for this.

Is the 810 display of what's behind you similar to that of the 1000 or is it different.

Any feedback would be a great help.

Thanks
  • Today i did the first ride with the Varia and my edge 810 - both have to be updated via Garmin Express (The Varia -wasnt found prior to the update by the edge).
    But now everything works fine.

My Varia only arrived yesterday, it paired with my 810 without the slightest problem but i doubt I'll get to ride the bike until Friday at the earliest. :(
  • I've been very happy with the Varia Rear Radar detector.

I have it paired with the 810 and it works great.

there doesn't seem to be any lag with the detection unlike when the navigation is running on the 810 :D

I finally got to use mine yesterday and I was pretty impressed, one car got past me without warning (well I didn't notice a warning) but I was going pretty fast at the time (30+mph) and the car past me pretty slowly.
I'm using the latest 3.4 firmware.
  • I am thinking about buying Varfia radar but I have some warries.
Can you post a picture how does Edge 810 show the car approching?
What options can be set up? Can radar work without red light?
    Thx for any replay!

    Have a look at Alan's link https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?327968-Varia-radar-Edge-810&p=800596#post800596
As he says you can choose which side of the screen you have the moving dot, you can also choose to have the coloured the bands at the sides of the screen on or off (Amber for car approaching Red for car approaching fast Green for all clear) the bands are not displayed all the time only when a vehicle is detected.
The dot starts at the bottom and moves up the screen as the vehicle gets closer to you.
I don't think you can use the Varia with the red light off, but I may be wrong.
  • The radar can be operated with the LEDs off when used with an Edge unit that has support for "Light Network" and has individual light control. Currently this has been released on the Edge 520 and 1000.
Garmin has said that they are working on adding "Light Network" support to the 510/810, but I don't know if it will include individual light control.

How do you disable the LEDs while leaving the radar working?
  • I found it. Set the Light Mode to Individual and then go back one screen and select the radar, go to the "Light Mode" menu and select "Off".
