Varia radar and edge sound

Hi,

Just looking for opinions and experiences with the radar and edge 1000 with regard to the audible alerts. In the few weeks I have been using it and for my type of riding, quiet roads, sometimes at night, i'm really impressed with the unit and the visual display it gives. However the sound from the edge is so quiet I never hear it, I know it works from a static test where it beeped when a car was picked up, but the sound was so low its no wonder I can never hear it on the bike.

Its also annoying that you have to have all audible alerts turned on as the noise it makes is rubbish and sounds like something made 20 years ago.

Anyone else have an issue with the sound ?

Same here. It actually is dangerous because you are forced to look down all the time. That cancels the increase in safety from the radar function.
If it is not possible to increase the volume with an update in the software, i would like to have an earplug for the signal.
GARMIN really should do something about this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you feel it's that dangerous maybe you should consider not having a distracting GPS on your handlebars at all.

I like to take a look at my gps when the moment is right and the situation safe. For good use of the varia, i should watch it all the time. Thats dangerous.
And something else: why dont you get a life?

"An earplug for the signal...." I don't see any safety concerns there at all.

Do you have a rear view mirror in your car? Is it dangerous "because you are forced to look up all the time" to see it?

If you ever actually purchase the Varia, I think you will find that a glance for a fraction of a second conveys all the info needed. Just like the mirror in a car.

P.S. I'm not sure about 57DIBBS, but I have a life -- just in case you were thinking of asking me that.

In my car i'm not afraid of being pushed of the road. On my bike i am.
I want to be warned. I also dont want to set my alarm every 5 minutes at night to check the fire alarm., I want a sound signal.
Dont you really get the point or are you just polluting this thread because you like to see your writing on the web ? (get a life!)
BTW, i already have a varia.

    Yes and no..

Yes there are alerts and yes you can hear them if in a quiet room.

No the alerts can't be heard during real world use.

I found the sounds on edge 520 quite loud - I've seen pedestrians turn around when they hear one.

I do think there should be 2 sounds - 1 chirp for a car detected and a second sound, e.g. 2 chirps when it is clear, that way you wouldn't need to look down to see if it is all clear
  • I have a Garmin 510 and have no problems at all with the volume of alerts, and that's with a skull cap over my ears, and that's not because of my keen hearing, I was diagnosed with tinnitus in both ears. I would say that without audible alerts the device is no better than checking a mirror, if you don't check it regularly it's no good, but with audible alerts I can just concentrate on riding!

    Varia Radar and Edge 1000

Same problem. Maybe if everyone with this problem sent a request for a firmware update to increase the sound that would help.
