Varia Vision - Who is getting it?

pretty cool device

i think it should be open to the fenix/920 watches - as this could be great in running applications as well.

  • I'm going to pass on it.. I had Google Glass and used them for cycling only for about 8 months.. I was also in on the Recon Jet early, early pre-orders..

Not really interested in HUD's after having used similar type unit...

would you tell us your experience with both devices? more so the recon jet?
  • Well, DCRainmaker, for one. He did a very positive review.

He mentioned there is a "vibrate" function, but it wasn't clear whether that could be tied to the Varia (e.g. vibrate upon first detection of car, like it beeps now) or whether it was just for other notifications.

I never actually got Recon Jet. I was on the early pre-order list and cancelled it after waiting through over a year of delays...

Google Glass was okay but had issues with the prism foil, sweat and heat... The HUD was cool but after a while I grew tired of it. I found that looking at the hud was actually more distracting than glancing down at the computer screen. Others may feel differently but I felt less aware and less safe if that makes sense.

I let another cyclist and friend try my Google Glass for a week and he came to the same conclusion.. Of course this will be a to each their own type of thing. Some may absolutely love the hud but I found it more of a distraction than useful..

I purchased Recon Jet last Spring. First impression was the large size and vision block. My dislike was the lack of dioptic focal range, for me wearing single focal contacts (normally bi-focal glasses) the adjustment wasn't enough to provide sharpe focus easily. Next was placement of the image inside the housing, always felt like wasn't centered and whole image not in view. The daylight visibility of image was poor if bright day or road surface was lighter asphalt. When calling / emailing support... Basically told to adjust nose piece to obtain correct alignment; which I didn't agree because it placed glasses in an unnatural position & comfort.
I use DSLR cameras w both eyes open, and microscopes with ease in vision alignment and dioptics range and can clearly see the internal data fields and image, not the same but similar in focal requirements.

I haven't read anything on the Varia Vision dioptic adjustment yet and how adjusted: mount on glasses or internal adjustment.

I'm interested and will try them, and purchase the Varia Radar to add to the information. I'm curious on vision alignment and weight over bumps & cracks.

Another one I'm very interested in is the Everysight Raptor, when released... Looks like the first true HUD for cycling with vision passthrough and not a screen.
  • Well... Contrary to my previous post, I went ahead and preordered them. Anyone know or have a release date? Clever training says February but was wondering if anyone has any insight into the exact date..
  • Cool! Thanks for the info.. I pre-ordered through Clever Training so I guess I should get some type of update from them around that date..
  • Sorely tempted, I must admit.
  • Looks like it's delayed.. Here is an email I got reference my pre order from Clever Training.

Thank you for your recent pre-order for the Garmin Varia Vision. This item has been slightly delayed beyond its original estimated availability. We expect our first shipment to arrive to our warehouse the second week of March. Unfortunately at this time we do not have confirmation regarding quantity available on the first shipment and cannot guarantee how many orders will be fulfilled immediately. We will continue working with the manufacturer to get any additional information as this date nears and keep you up to date.
