Garmin Varia Real World

I got the Garmin Varia bike rear facing radar for Xmas, when I opened the present I was not impressed as I had heard lots of mixed feed back (e.g why is this device needed, you can hear traffic etc). I've now been riding with this device on for four rides, and in the real world I found it frankly AMAZING !. Here are some real world examples I encountered:
1) while riding with my family, whom cycle slowly. The device not only told my when motorised vehicles were approaching, but other faster cyclists whom where cycling faster too. The road cyclists were quiet and fast, and I was able to notify my family including two children that they were approaching.
2) in reality, it was able to notify me BEFORE I was able actually hear the petrol motorised vehicles a lot of the time, especially when I was cycling into the wind (and I don't wear headphones while cycling)
3) when cycling away from the sun (I.e. sun was on my back), this time of year when the sun is low in the sky, I could not always see traffic behind me due to the sun (e.g having to look into the sun, even with sun glasses). This device was obviously uneffected by the sun brightness and could tell me exactly when vehicles were coming up behind.
4) lastly, today I believed this device saved my life ! I was going fast down hill, with a bend at the bottom. Half way down the device notified me something was approaching at very high speed, the radar said it was right behind me just before the bend where I was about to pull out to give me space to go round then bend, but I still could not hear anything behind. Being prudent I decided at the last moment to slow down and go tight towards the curb, rather then pull out slightly. Good job I did, other wise, this inconsiderate ELECTRIC car owner, whom over took me on the bend would have hit me at speed.
So before anyone expresses an opinion on this device, I recommend they actually try it first before expressing their opinion. While I appreciate there were some early software issues, these issues appear to have been resolved and works seamlessly with my Garmin Edge 1000, combined the Varia it I s a great innovative solution which goes a long way to helping us cyclists to be safe on the roads !!!
Lastly, I just want to stress I don't work for Garmin, I'm a 47 year guy whom simply enjoys cycling.
  • Many thanks for posting this. I as well got a Varia for Christmas and was somewhat sceptical. I haven't been out yet, but after seeing your review i shall definitely put this on the bike. I have just married it up with the Edge 1000.

    Great review and thank you.

  • I was skeptical about the radar as well. When it was 1st announced I found it interesting but procrastinated as I didn't see it as being a must have accessory. I finally decided to order it figuring I'd probably end up returning or selling it.

I was wrong! Now that I have it and have done several rides with it, mine is not going anywhere! I've gotten to the point now where if I were to ride without it, I would not feel comfortable.

I had a similar incident that you did but slightly different. I was on a road that does not see much vehicle traffic the other day when the radar alerted me to a vehicle. The moving dot on my Edge 520 was moving fast, very fast! I quickly moved to the side of the road and stopped. The speed of the moving dot spooked me! Sure enough, a split second later I was passed by a car going in excess of 100MPH. The car had no intention of moving over so there is no telling what might have happened if I had not moved over and stopped.

The few times I have cycled on the bike path and been passed by others cyclist my unit has not picked them up. Maybe they need to be traveling at a much faster speed to be identified?

I was extremely skeptical of the radar and now I can't see myself riding with out it..

    Other cyclists identification

You mention that it didn't identify other cyclists for you, but it did for myself when I was riding with my family. My family (including 2 children) cycle very slowly, at about an average of 8mph, the device picked up road cyclists whom generally average about 17mph. However, when I cycled by myself at a higher speed, it did not pick up other cyclists. The closing speed between the vehicle behind you, and yourself has to be over a certain speed (I don't know the exact closing speed which triggers detection).

Today I was riding in a group of cycling friends (about 12 in the group), the Varia didn't pick up other members of the group as we were all going about the same speed. At the beginning of the cycle there were the normal none believers about how good the device was. However as we cycled they started to appreciate it as they to could see when traffic was approaching from behind as the rear light on the unit changed/flashed. By the time we got to the coffee shop, the group clearly liked the device, and 3 of them are planning to order one.... I wish I was on commission lol
