Is it possible to turn light OFF and have radar ONLY

Pretty much as the title says -- Is it possible to turn light OFF and have radar ONLY?

I checked the manual and searched the forum, but did not find anything about this.

Reason for asking: light unneeded, so don't want to use battery needlessly for that.
  • Edge - fw - 6
    Varia fw 3.4

I'm sure that I saw a lights off button one but I can't find it now.
Can anyone take me through it - very carefully.
I have set lights to individual - but I don't see any way to switch off the oghts.
The poor battery life - about 3 hours is causing me a problem and I would rather have the radar alert on my screen and use an auxiliary light.
    Thanks
  • ... and also why are my posts now being moderated?
  • On the 1000 go to sensors -> lights

Check that the "Network Options" -> Light Mode, is set to "Individual"

Go down through the Light Network list and select the Radar -> Light Mode, set it to "off"

If the radar does not show in the list then switch it on and use the "add sensor" option at the bottom of the light network list to add it.

    I hope this makes sense.
  • Thank you for this.
Are we talking about turning the Varia radar unit's own lights off - or the other lights on the network?

I am taking about the radar unit. I don't have other Garmin lights and I'm afraid that I simply don't see the menu options you have referred to.
I'm trying to switch off the radar lights so that I have more radar time because between 3 hours and 4 hours, the battery life gets a bit hit and miss.

Why on earth can't I see these menu options? I suppose that it is me but I just don't see how.
  • You should be able to create a light network that comprises of just the RTL.

If I get some time today I will take a series of screen shots and post them as that might be easier to follow. Some regional models of the RTL have a subset of the light mode options as local laws do not allow rear lights to be set to a flashing mode for example.
  • Well I don't know what happened, but it suddenly all appeared just as you have said and I managed to switch the lights off.

I swear that the "off " option wasn't there before – that's my story anyway and I'm sticking to it!!

I really don't understand why I didn't see it before and I'm sure it wasn't there but anyway thanks for all the advice and it looks as if it is sorted out now.
  • Varia does not remember the "off" setting

Not sure if it's only happening to me. Both Edge 520 and the Varia are on the latest firmware. I set the Light Mode to Off and it turns off the LED on the Varia radar. I then turn off the Edge 520, which automatically shuts off the Varia radar. After waiting for more than one minute, i turn on the Edge 520, follow by the Varia radar. As soon as the Edge 520 forms a light network with the radar, it turns off the LED. At this point, it still remembers the "Off" setting. If I turn off the Edge 520, wait more than 1 minute, and then turn it back on, the Varia radar no longer remembers the Off setting. The setting is now "Overdrive". This is kind of annoying because I have to change the Light Mode setting back to "Off" again. Since I commute to work daily, having to turn on/off the Edge 520 and the Varia radar twice a day, I have to change the Light Mode setting to "Off" every day.

This is something that Garmin is aware of and we are actively investigating. I do apologize for the inconvenience.

    Amazing. A response from Garmin!!!

Thanks for this response. It would be very nice if Garmin would start engaging with people regularly on this forum. It would be hugely welcomed by everyone here, I'm sure.

And would pay for itself tenfold between fewer one-on-one calls/emails to tech support and generation of good will.
