Don't know whether there will be other interesting things, but today I discovered that the VARIA will send a warning message to the Edge 1000 head unit when the battery is low. I think it had approximately 10% left. I finished my ride about 10 minutes after receiving the warning message on the Edge (which must be dismissed manually) and at that point restarted the light to see the battery level. One LED.
configuration settings need explaining in the manual
Also wondered if anyone could explain the differences between the following menu settings in "configuration" that show up on the edge 1000 under the Varia Sensor:
AUTO
DAY
NIGHT
POWER SAVE
INDIVIDUAL
Most of them seem self explanatory but the different settings don't seem to do anything on the RTL 500 or the Edge.
There is no explanation for these settings in the on line manual or the one that came with the unit. For the record, I like the unit.
Those settings do not apply to the RTL 500. Those are settings for the headlight with the exception of INDIVIDUAL, if you have one and it is connected. The INDIVIDUAL is for the Varia tail light, not the radar unit, which you can use in pairs for signaling turns if you want.
I went on vacation and forgot to move the quarter-turn mount from my main bike to my "travel" bike. So I had the Varia, but no mount.
I decided to try just putting the varia in my under-saddle bag and zipping it shut. Of course, I tried to get it as vertical as possible before zipping the bag shut.
Worked really well! This was a daylight ride, so the lack of a light didn't matter much, but the radar function worked really well. If not 100%, then at least 85% as it did seem that sometimes the cars were a bit closer than normal when first picked up by the radar.
