Varia car approaching notification not appearing on Edge 1000

The Varia pairs up fine with my Edge 1000. I've enabled the device in devices and turned it on in the data screen section. Both have up to date firmwares.

The Varia is mounted just above my seatpost clamp - height wise approx. 32 inches from ground to centreline of Varia.

I went for a ride and despite being passed by many cars, the alerts (dots and flashing red bars etc..) did not appear at all on the Edge 1000 display. The connection logo appears in the top right hand corner fine.

What am I doing wrong? Is the Varia set too low or is there an issue with it I'm unaware of? Garmin haven't exactly specified the minimum height the Varia needs to be to ensure adequate detection...?

  • You don't need the RDU (VDU) if the 520 has the correct software build on it.

    I know you have returned the unit, but I don't suppose you noted down what the serial number was?

    Have just received my unit (RTL 500 - SN 48D021413) and have had exactly the same issue this morning on its first ride out with my EDGE 1000.
    Plan to do some more testing this evening and may have to head back off to Garmin...
    Believe nobody has been able to solve the issue without returning the device so far?

    Have just tried demo mode, works just fine... Believe it is going back... Pity demo mode looks good.

    Yes, Evans Cycles. I phoned them and explained. They were very good, told me to tale unit into shop, which I did on Tuesday. No questions, they said they would replace - it would be there Friday (maybe Monday). I went in today (Friday) and it hasn't arrived yet - maybe because all of us are getting replacements!

    Has anyone who had bought the radar at Evans been replacing it successfully meanwhile?

    Got the same issue, would need to return and received feedback that there currently is no evidence of a faulty batch, so these might be exceptional hardware faults...

    Haven't received a replacement from Evans yet , Garmin are now looking into my complaint after many emails with the possibility there are faulty units around . Will post when I hear back or have replacement varia .

    Have just heard back from Evans with my new unit , I asked for them to test in shop before I went to pick up . Guess what ?? Same issue not working with Garmin 520 in shop . They are in touch with there suppliers as its now very likely there is a bad batch of Varias around so I would say don't purchase unit shop tests in store with there own Garmins .
  • Quite disappointed with Garmin aftersales

    Had bought mine on the Garmin webshop (Belux) hoping to get a better service in case of issue... Yet after mailing them last week, finally just received my RMA voucher. Have to send it back to the UK, and probably wont have a new unit before days/weeks...
    If I had ordered on Amazon... Would have already had probably received a new one...
