Varia car approaching notification not appearing on Edge 1000

The Varia pairs up fine with my Edge 1000. I've enabled the device in devices and turned it on in the data screen section. Both have up to date firmwares.

The Varia is mounted just above my seatpost clamp - height wise approx. 32 inches from ground to centreline of Varia.

I went for a ride and despite being passed by many cars, the alerts (dots and flashing red bars etc..) did not appear at all on the Edge 1000 display. The connection logo appears in the top right hand corner fine.

What am I doing wrong? Is the Varia set too low or is there an issue with it I'm unaware of? Garmin haven't exactly specified the minimum height the Varia needs to be to ensure adequate detection...?

Thanks
  • Received a Varia unit for Christmas😊
Paired very quickly with my Edge 1000, but (surprise surprise) had exactly the above symptoms: radar icon appeared at top right, but no notifications of approaching cars.
Applied the 2.41 patch as recommended and bingo: works perfectly!
Many, many thanks for the advice!
Serial number of unit (RTL500) is 4L8000220.
  • Varia now displays cars on EDGE 520

Upgrading the software on the Varia to version 2.41 does solve the problem of radar results not displaying on the EDGE 520

I had to upgrade the Varia from version 2.0 software (displayed in Garmin Express and pre-installed on a Varia bought in December) to version 2.41

To do this download the ZIP file and install it as advised in post 56 in this thread. That is what worked for me. I put the Varia in Demo mode and instantly the cars showed up on the Edge.

WHY the Varia software at version 2.0 shows as up-to-date in Garmin Express and does not download the version 2.41 automatically (or any version that makes the radar work as advertised) is a mystery to me.

Very poor from Garmin IMO that users have to find the solution on this forum and update their Varia manually to get it to work with the Edge 520

I have had the same problem. Nothing regarding radar displays on 1000 except the icon in the upper right corner. The software for both devices is up to date -- at least that's what Garmin Express has told me. Now I have to go to this forum to find a solution. Not good Garmin.

You might want to try removing the Varia Radar from your Edge 1000 and pair the two again. If you are still having trouble reach out to Garmin Support at the link located here.

    Done that and no go.

I have software version 3.4 on the Radar unit and 8.1 on the Edge 1000. Am I to believe this problem still has not been fixed by Garmin? This stuff should work out of the box once the software has been upgraded.
  • If you power the RTL on without the Edge being powered on what do the LEDs do including the single small status LED below the main bar of LEDs.

Haven't done that test as it worked fine at the start on my last ride (yesterday, 6-6-16) but in the middle of the ride I got a system error on the Edge 1000. Evidently it had disconnected. So for the rest of the ride it ceased to function. It was back to the icon showing on the upper right of the Edge but nothing else worked.

We're well into 2016, I've just purchased a Varia 500 and it has the same problem, despite Garmin's claimed fixes since 2015. I've updated the software on both the Varia and my Edge 1000, but no luck. The radar symbol appears top right and it turns red when the Varia is switched off - so the connection is recognised, but there is no traffic column. It seems I've bought a very expensive tail light that's just a tail light.

I work in the Middle East and it's really difficult (impossible) to get stuff replaced here. So this is a serious hassle. Anybody come across a solution yet?
