Varia car approaching notification not appearing on Edge 1000

The Varia pairs up fine with my Edge 1000. I've enabled the device in devices and turned it on in the data screen section. Both have up to date firmwares.

The Varia is mounted just above my seatpost clamp - height wise approx. 32 inches from ground to centreline of Varia.

I went for a ride and despite being passed by many cars, the alerts (dots and flashing red bars etc..) did not appear at all on the Edge 1000 display. The connection logo appears in the top right hand corner fine.

What am I doing wrong? Is the Varia set too low or is there an issue with it I'm unaware of? Garmin haven't exactly specified the minimum height the Varia needs to be to ensure adequate detection...?

Thanks

  • Same Issue here, just applied 2.41.
S/N is 48F000928, Country is Germany.
  • A big zero to garmin aftersales

Just to conclude my fun with Garmin...
So finally recieved today my replacement device from Garmin (see previous pages of this post). And it didnt work... Check firmware, it has version 2.3. I update to 2.41 and now works fine!
So all in all I have had two Garmin devices, with the same issue... Waited 5 weeks for a 5 minutes solve with a firmware update.
Luckily I was reading this forum, I can imagine the standard user when he recieves his second non functionning device...

Tomorrow full test in Brussels streets!!!
  • Thanks for all your efforts in sorting this

    Hi

Just wanted to let you know how pleased I was with all of the work you have all put in especially the "Guru". I have just bought a Varia RTL and couldn't get it to display traffic. I returned it to Halfords (I know, but I managed to get it for £126, so very pleased with it NOW) and got a replacement. Surprised to find it didn't work either so thought I would check the forum. Really pleased I did.

The zip file worked a treat and the instructions were exemplary. Many thanks
    Ian
  • If you do download the file to fix the radar unit I think it would be useful if you could post that you have done that and along with the serial number of the radar unit. That information will allow the manufacturing batch to be determined.

I had the same issue, I have downloaded the fix but not tested as yet. If there are still problems I'll post here, otherwise assume it has worked!

Serial Number: 4L8000250 (as reported by Garmin Express), however on the Edge 1000 the serial number is reported as: 3912025082 (under Sensors > Varia > Light Network > Radar > About > ) - go figure!
Bought in UK from Evans Cycles, Gatwick, UK yesterday.
  • Anyone having this car approaching notification issue with the latest Edge 1000 & Varia update? Mine worked flawlessly and now since the update, it has killed the notification column. *Sigh*
  • There was a change in the configuration with this release of the 1000.

The Radar is now a sensor in its own right and not just an entry in the light network. This is how Garmin added the extra configuration options for controlling the Radar layout on the screen.

Have a look through your list of paired sensors. If you do not see the radar unit then add it in as a sensor.

Err, no. Using version 3, the radar was enabled in the sensor list AND the light network. Both devices (Edge 1000 & Varia) communicated just fine. However the car approaching notification DOES NOT appear on the Edge 1000 despite being connected.

I then downgraded to the patch you attached in the previous page. Worked.

The problem is clearly the version 3 Varia release, not the Edge 1000. Garmin have screwed it up big time. I cannot believe Garmin released version 3 only to break the Varia in the process. This is obviously related to the Edge 1000, not sure if the issues are the same for the other Garmin Edges.
  • I've got to say that I have not experienced and issues with the new firmware on either unit.

The problem must be related to the new radar software. I have updated the Edge 1000 to ver. 5.2 , but have a problem with updating software on the radar. But everything work perfect with 5.2 on the Edge, and the "old" software in the radar.
