Varia car approaching notification not appearing on Edge 1000

The Varia pairs up fine with my Edge 1000. I've enabled the device in devices and turned it on in the data screen section. Both have up to date firmwares.

The Varia is mounted just above my seatpost clamp - height wise approx. 32 inches from ground to centreline of Varia.

I went for a ride and despite being passed by many cars, the alerts (dots and flashing red bars etc..) did not appear at all on the Edge 1000 display. The connection logo appears in the top right hand corner fine.

What am I doing wrong? Is the Varia set too low or is there an issue with it I'm unaware of? Garmin haven't exactly specified the minimum height the Varia needs to be to ensure adequate detection...?

Thanks
  • So from what I understand the issue I had with mine is now solved by a software update. A little frustrating that Garmin asked me to send it back last week... How long before it comes back... But good to know the issue is solved.
  • Frustration sharing around Garmin aftersales

So one final posting, just wanted to share my frustration with Garmin aftersales after this experience... This applies to the European team, hopefully you get better service in the US....

So, receive my Garmin Varia on 28th of october, not detecting cars... Write to Garmin aftersales on 30th of October, referencing this thread on the forum. They answer on the 5th of November and ask me to file a RMA form to get a return slip, which I finally receive on the friday 6th. Manage to send it out on Monday 9th to read on 12th that the problem has been solved by a firmware update.........
I send them a mail this morning to ask them the status of my return and to complain about the fact that they could have told me to keep it for a few days until the firmware update....
Their answer was straight and simple : We do not know about firmware updates, you should get your unit back in 4 weeks.... Arrrghhhhhhh

Hopefully somebody from Garmin will read this. I really like your products (and have quite a few of them) but please.. Beef up your aftersales... Clearly the last time I order from the Garmin online shop. If I had ordered on Amazon, would already have a new device....

That is enough whining for me for today. But thought it was worth sharing...
  • Garmin has a "quick ship" option. It works like this: you purchase a new unit from them and receive it in a few days. Then you mail back the defective unit with the RMA. When they receive the defective unit, they issue a credit to your VISA card (or whatever card you used). It usually happens so quick that there is no "out of pocket" money -- the charge and the credit appear in the same billing cycle. Just a head's up for next time.
  • I spent some time working with Garmin on this and here is the latest update.

Part of the confusion here has been that there are actually 2 different problems.

Problem 1 - Missing calibration data
Symptom - If you switch the radar unit on and let it complete the power up sequence none of the LEDs will go on except the status LED. The status LED will flash red.
Corrective action - The unit needs to be replaced.

Problem 2 - Radar transmitter is switched off
Symptom - The radar powers on and the LEDs can be set to flash or to be steady. The Edge will pair with the radar and will display traffic if the radar is put in to demo mode, but it will not display traffic when out of demo mode. The reason is that the radar is not sending a signal to detect traffic.
Corrective action - Garmin will fix this in a future release, but in the short-term they have made build 2.41 available, which fixes this issue. Download the attached zip file and unpack the gupdate.gcd file in to the Garmin folder on the radar unit. After doing the install you can leave the unit at build 2.41 or roll it back to build 2.20.

    Thank you AWEATHERALL!!

    RTL500 not DOA ;)
    Unit was shipped with FW2.30

I can confirm the method for "Problem 2" works for me. Thank you very much! :)

  • Replacement radar works w/o update

Got a replacement from Evans some days ago, been testing on 6 rides meanwhile: Displays flawlessly on my Edge 1000 now although Firmware is 2.2. Seems I had one with a hw fault before. Problem left: You get used to it, and no approaching traffic on the display while on city streets or cars vanishing behind you as they take turns become irritating:D. Like it!
  • Did the firmware update?

I updated to Firmware 2.41 by placing the file into the Garmin folder, it downloaded, I unplugged the unit and turned it on. On plugging the unit back in the GCD file had gone.

However, Garmin Express is still showing Firmware 2.2.....

Did the firmware update or not ??

    Thank you.
  • Garmin Express does not actually show what version is on the device if the version on the device is greater than the version that is available for download. It shows the latest version that it has for download.

You can check what version is on the radar by looking in the GarminDevice.xml on the radar unit or by looking at the sensors about a page on the Edge for the radar.
  • Thank you.....this is what the XML file shows:

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><Device xsi:schemaLocation="www.garmin.com/.../v2 www.garmin.com/.../GarminDevicev2.xsd" xmlns:xsi="www.w3.org/.../XMLSchema-instance" xmlns="www.garmin.com/.../SoftwareVersion><Description>Varia Bike Radar</Description></Model><Id>3911141982</Id><MassStorageMode><UpdateFile><PartNumber>006-B2225-00</PartNumber><Version><Major>02</Major><Minor>41</Minor></Version><Path>GARMIN</Path><FileName>GUPDATE.GCD</FileName></UpdateFile> </MassStorageMode></Device>
  • Looks like Version 02.41.
