Varia car approaching notification not appearing on Edge 1000

The Varia pairs up fine with my Edge 1000. I've enabled the device in devices and turned it on in the data screen section. Both have up to date firmwares.

The Varia is mounted just above my seatpost clamp - height wise approx. 32 inches from ground to centreline of Varia.

I went for a ride and despite being passed by many cars, the alerts (dots and flashing red bars etc..) did not appear at all on the Edge 1000 display. The connection logo appears in the top right hand corner fine.

What am I doing wrong? Is the Varia set too low or is there an issue with it I'm unaware of? Garmin haven't exactly specified the minimum height the Varia needs to be to ensure adequate detection...?

Thanks
  • I have found Garmin customer support very poor regarding this problem ,I have given them all relevant information and tried all requests from them and got absolutely nowhere !! Feel like I'm banging my head against a brick wall !! I have now left my problem in hands of Evans Cycles who have been very supportive through all of this . Hopefully my 3rd Varia unit will work ???

For a supposedly safety device you would think all checks regarding operation would have been tested before despatch from manufacturers !

Would it not be an idea to get Evans to try the devices with the dedicated display unit? I know you want to use the Radar with an Edge, but it may help to prove that the problem is with the Radar and not the Edge's software.

Yes it probably would but unfortunately Evans Glasgow wasn't stocking them in shop as of yet so therfore never had any 2 part versions of varia with display and radar . Mine was the 1st they had seen and sold . Not a great start eh !
  • I don't think the issue is a communication issue between the radar unit and the Edge as they work when put in to demo mode. The issue appears to be that the the radar calibration data is missing. This was why I was asking what the status LED is doing (see posting #38).
  • What does the radar unit look like when it is powered on in terms of LED lights that are showing and their pattern.

Is the status LED red and slowly pulsing with the other lights off?

    Hi Alan,

In this video it's what I get since I first connected the Varia to the EDGE in terms of LED behaviour.

    Thanks
  • Thanks. I think I see the status LED slowly flashing red. This is easier to see if you set the light network to individual control and then go to the radar control and switch the light mode to "off". This way the flashing LEDs do not swamp out what the status LED is doing. If things are working correctly then the status LED will slowly flash blue. If it is flashing red then the radar calibration data is missing.

If the calibration data is missing then the unit needs to be return as you cannot fix it.

    Hi Alan,

Just did what you wrote and the status LED is flashing blue! I wouldn't say slowly (I would guess 2 quick flashes per second, something like ..__..__..__ where slowly would mean .___.___.___ >> I hope I can explain myself in this "stupid way) :)

    Thanks
  • Hi Fernando,

If you leaving the LEDs flashing on the radar unit (light mode flashing or override), but cover them up so that you can more easily see what the status LED is doing, what does it do?

Did you try putting the radar unit in to demo mode to see what the Edge does?

To put it in to demo mode you need to create a zero size file called enable_demo.txt and place it in the Garmin folder on the radar unit.

After completing the test remember to remove the file.

Yes, I did (following your instruction in a previous post)! Everything went fine! The Edge got the info and showed the "animations" when a car is moving closer to the radar.

Also did the downgrade to version 2.0
  • Thanks for the update.
