Edge 25 surprise

Yesterday, just for the *** of it, I decided to see if my Edge 25 would pair with my Varia tail light - I wasn't expecting it to as I had seen no indication that the most recent Edge 25 firmware supported it. Lo and behold it recognised it and paired - will take it out on a ride this evening to see how it performs.
  • Happy to report that the Varia and Edge 25 work together nicely. A white dot moves up the left of the display (as opposed to the right on the Edge 1000) as a car approaches and of course there is no color, but it works.
  • So, I should dump my brand new 520, which I bought only so I could sync with the Varia, and buy a 25? Otherwise I have a $200 paperweight on my desk, and an Edge 520 that does little more than my Fenix 3, has broken BT sync, and won't work with my HRM Run ....Growing impatient with garmin's software/firmware incompetence!

I don't get it. You bought the 520 knowing it was not compatible (yet, at least) with the Varia and you are mad at Garmin?

I agree. When I ordered my 520, Garmin announced that it would be compatible on all devices, including the 510 and 810. Never in a million years would I imagine that a month plus since I got my Varia and 520, they still wouldn't work together. Just retarded. My Varia is a paperweight and will pretty much be useless for another month or so when they decide to release a 520 update. By then I will be cyclocrossing and training indoors.

To the post about Garmin 1000 compatible only; that was not the case when we all ordered our equipment. Infact, go read the DCRainmaker write up written months ago if you want proof. We all know it will be compatible soon enough. What makes us with both Varias and 520s mad is that it's just not acceptable to release something at the same time and have it be incompatible.

I was very nearly in the same boat, luckily the 4.20 firmware was released for my 810 without Varia support just before I ordered, and going by previous experience of Garmin firmware releases it'll now be a couple of months before the next one.
I would't say the Varia is useless though, it's just a very very expensive tail light, that varies it's flashing as a car approaches. :p

Edit: The 810 was definitely on the original list of compatible devices.
  • Yes, it was listed as a compatible device. Actually I'm more frustrated with the poor performance of the 520 with regards to BT and BLE connectivity (or lack of), inability to receive notifications, and incompatibility with their premium HRM Run strap (yes, I know this wasn't listed, but seriously if they can make the HRM TRI work, why not RUN?). Sorry to veer of topic from Varia, just venting;)

I had same connectivity issue. The problem was that when you connect your phone via Bluetooth, there are two connections. One will be BLE edge 520 and the other BT edge 520. Once I figured this out it works great with my iPhone 5s.
