Hi. It seems to be a general problem with XC pedals and suggested solution by Garmin is here:
How Do I Stop the Squeaking Coming From Rally XC Pedals?
They suggest to lube cleat area... Is it only me…
I tried a couple of different lubes, including the teflon-based that Garmin recommends. It does help for about 25-30 km. I typically do longer routes (>100k) and after the initial 30k, the pedals start…
Problem solved - it's all about the shoe/pedal combination ...
Switching to five ten Kestrel Lace Mountain Bike shoes eliminated what bothered me for such a long time.
Well, it…
I can confirm the problem is back after two months of riding (around 65h riding). What a crappy design…
Ha ha.
I guess Garmin will come with a “solution” for that at only USD 999.
Lame.
I'm having the same problem.I've tried a number of things:
Nothing reliably eliminates the squeaking so far. Next I'll try a different brand of cleats. Garmin should really do something about this issue. It's annoying ...
I've switched from Shimano cleats to the cleats that came with the pedals and the squeaking went away. Curious to see whether this will last as the cleats start to wear ...
I bought the same lube (Finish Line Pedal and Clear Lubricant), yet the same story all over: it works fine for about 30kms, really fine, yet after that, all squeaking again. It drives me completely crazy. Normally the Garmin hardware is really cool, but this ... no words for!
Which shoes are you using? I'm just curious as in my case it was "only" a certain pair of shoes that caused the trouble ...
For me, there is no difference in squeaking between the Shimano cleats and the Garmin cleats. For me, the Garmin SPD cleats are not as comfortable to ride as Shimano as they have smaller degree of float.
So far, I tested Shimano RX8 and Giro Sector. Both in combination with Shimano and Garmin cleats. The pedals squeak in all combinations.
Here are my findings:
The squeaking is caused by putting not enough pressure to the downside on the back of the pedal:

As the signs of wear on the shoe soles of my 5/10 Kestrels show, they sit really tight on the pedal - no squeaking there:

The signs of wear on my Northwave Rebel 2 are much lighter - they even squeak, when i ride on rough gravel without pedalling and they only vibrate:
Thanks again for sharing! I'm using different Shimano shoes and Shimano cleats, all squeak. Yet, even on the Shimano shoes I used for years, no similar signs of wear as you have, not even light. So that could indeed cause the trouble. Is there a way to increase the tension or pressure on the downside on the back of the pedal, or is it - as you seem to suggest - just a matter of finding the right shoes?
