RS200 pedals steadily decreasing power over ride compared to trainer - Answered: No fault of RS200

I've noticed that when I calibrate my trainer and my RS200 pedals right before a Zwift ride they are almost exactly the same at the start  but during the ride the pedals will decrease power about 15 minutes in by about 3 watts. Then every ten minutes it loses another 3 watts. After a 40 minute ride the pedals were about 10-11 watts less. (Strava noted that the pedals averaged 5 watts less overall which makes sense.) The RS200 pedals are connected to an Edge 130 plus and I don't see any issues there and the temperature was exactly the same in the room so I'm a bit stumped why this is happening. Anyone else? It's strange they stay identical for about 15 minutes or so. I can definitely feel its the pedals that are changing and not the trainer.

  • I think that even without the trainer, I can definitely feel the extra output in my legs that the pedals are asking for towards the end of the ride to keep the same power as in the beginning of the ride. This is definitely not fatigue. Also the two seem to be identical for about the first 15 minutes or so.

  • You still didnt tell us what kind of trainer do You have. Only the Neo series are reliable for any power meter test due to it has no temp drift, all others have (some of them have "smart" algorithm to eliminate it , some of them have "not so smart"). For proper test You need a 3rd powermeter (a spider 4example) and compare the 3 power values. There is bigger chance that your trainer has problem and not the pedals. How is the balance from start to end, if one of the pedal is fading then the balance should move to the opposite side.

  • So I figured out why there is a difference after my test ride this morning. I started looking at the power a little more closely between the trainer (Kurt Kinetic inRide 3) and the RS200 pedals and what I noticed is the longer I ride the more my pedal stroke starts to become slightly less even (the "valleys' in the pedal stroke are ever so slightly lower.) The trainer doesn't really register them but the pedals do. So even though I don't feel tired my pedal stroke is telling a different story.

This morning I tried to keep it as even as possibly and sure enough the trainer and the pedals showed exactly the same 162 power average after a 45 min ride.

Yesterday when I got off the bike and continued to ride after a 15 sec pause the reason they were the same at the time is probably because I had 15 sec break and my pedal stroke was slightly more even after that.

So in the end, it looks like these pedals are working great.  Thanks everyone for the help in figuring this out.

  • Same with me. I am using Elite Justo trainer and it has autocalibration. I monitor the power of the trainer and the pedals simultaneously in the PerfPro application. At the beginning of the training, the difference is insignificant, but over time it constantly increases
