Run different timing gate sets during one activity

I was just doing my first runs and testing the new timing gate function.
I really like it and it was one of the main reasons for me to get the edge mtb. But I might be stupid but I can only do one set of gates per activity?

So I was recording a E-MTB Activity on my after work tour.
This tour includes two trails. For each trail I setup a series of gates. While I am in my activity I started the timing for trail one and did some laps there which worked fine.
After that I wanted to do the same for trail two but this didn´t work. The edge told me I would have to start a new activity to start my other set of gates.

Is this the way it is intended?

  • Currently timing gates feature is totally pointless dont bother wasting your money. Its the only reason i bought it  regret big time

  • Its totally rubbish i feel like i have been conned

  • I agree very annoyed waste of money

  • @RobRob could you explain what makes it feel like you have been conned? What did you expect vs what you got?

  • I'm not feeling conned with Timing Gates (TA), once i started understand them i realized its just not the feature i need (maybe many of us).
These is what i learned from Timing Edges (testing them in deep):
    - Simply: are shortcuts of the Lap button
    - They're privates and localy storage, there is not Timing Gates dashboard/manager
    - The results are stored only for the activity on going, it doesn't record the historical results (new activity, new results).
    - Their not automatically detected, you must select the desired TA series previously saved, and you can onlye select 1 series per activity (TA are not segements)
    - The green/red (ahead/behind) timing UI its work from the 2nd lap and forward, since the 1st lap doesnt have any timing records yet, meaning this is pointless feature for races without a repetitive circuit trail, not for DH, Enduro, XCM...

When TA are usefull? i can only image a few scnearios:
    - Training/Racing over trail circuits with at least 2 Laps
    - Thats all xD

What i expected from the Timing Gates is closer to the segments, maybe a new feature or the current segements with a few (but very important) improvements.
    - Create unlimited Gates (in segments form like) over the trails i ride often, i understand if this should be doing manually in the place due the use of the sensors (gps, accelerometer, gyroscopic direction...)
    - Auto-detect my timing records when i run through the Start->End Gate (just like segments)
    - Store the historical timing records, and the UI (red|green box) should allow to compare against the previous Lap or my best registered record (any time, not just the current activity).

As i said, this is more like a Segment feature, that the current Segments Feature could handle if the Garmin dev team implement these upgrades:
    - A segment dashboard (web or mobile) where we can easily enable|disable our own or favorite segments.
The problem is that the segments are public, full of junk or repetitive segments, the devices automatically take the segment they think is frequent or closest to us but it is not accurate, not to mention the clutter when you are in a bike park closer to the multiple segments starting from the same point.
    - The Data Field of the ahead/behind timing UI should display the segment(s) from the segements "White List" that we previously enabled.
    - Optional: allow to compare the running time against preselected goal (my all time best, specific date record, or the previous record|Lap)

  • Ok, heres what i explained on a previous post. Thank you.

I am also very disappointed. If im riding a route and maybe only do a set run once then sureley it would be reasonable to expect it to compare my times to the last time i did it on a previous ride. I cant even.look back after the ride and see timing gate times from different days all on one page. Just a minor software change would make a pretty useless tool into an amazing one! Currently i feel i have wasted my money.

  • Funny. You had 4 posts basically saying you were ripped off.

I mostly agree with your points. Right now it's a pretty niche feature that i don't use like many.

The big swing and miss is historical data. Who is using this function that doesn't want to know their best time. No one.

Also its lame we can't setup gates in Garmin Connect. Remembering to hit the gate button on a trail is not easy unless you take a lap specifically to set gates which is not ideal. Any why only 10, so arbitrary and not useful on long trails.

Here's to hoping garmin refined this feature. It has a lot of potential.
