Edge MTB Specification - Training

Hi!

I was waiting long time for a compact small-sized Edge for cycling to replace using watch and the Edge MTB is really nice compact.

The Edge seems to be a very interesting item with smaller dimensions and replacement for the 130 Plus but when I compare it to the 840 I see there are some software-related differences in:

there is NO:

-  Training Status

- Training Load, Focus

- Training Effect

- !!! Unified Training Status

- Real-Time Stamina

Because missing this specs, using the Edge MTB with a Fenix 8 for training - triathlon, combination of cycling, running, and workouts will totally distort and garble all the training graphs, Acute Load graphs, Stress, Body Battery, Recovery and finally:

- there is no possibilty to optimize cycling with running and other sports based on Garmin statistics or using any paid A.I. feature based on measurements so the idea of any metering is lost.

my question:

- are there any error in the specs or will be these specs added to the Edge MTB later?

Thank you

  • The Edge MTB does not have Training Status on the device itself, but workouts recorded on this device will still contribute to the Training Status information on your compatible device, in this case a fenix 8.

More information on this can be found here. The Edge MTB not having Training Status as a feature will not skew or negatively impact the metrics displayed on your Primary Training Device as long as it is synced frequently.

  • Hello Blake.

    Thank you for answer.

I don't think contributing information that way (partly) will be O.K. It is not enought.

I have an old Garmin Instinct and behaves the same way like Edge MTB - there is NO Training Status and other finctionality ... and all workouts recorded with the Instinct 1 are only shown in Garmin Connect but they do not affect the Status, Load, Recovery, ... , no Endurance Score, no Hill Score, no Training Load, ...

Just an short example to imagine what will happen when somebody use device without unified training status and other functionality:

You did a 100km cycling and next day a 5 km swim with Instinct 1

The Training Status / Training Load remains ZERO

    Load focus : High-Low Aerobic/Anaerobic not updated

When I later midnight changed the Instinct 1 to Fenix 8 and opened the Run app, it gives me "fully recovered" and offer "threshold run" or "sprint 10x3", ...

So I stopped using the Instinct 1 and only use it for step recording in Garden. Okay, Instinct is an old device.

But Edge MTB is a new device and not cheap, maybe could be better to update the firmware and put all the Training status sync into it.

The last thing - the paid Garmin+ Connect+ feature: 9,- EUR per month offering an A.I. which analyze your data. It' will be useless in this scenario and will give bad data because it cannot analyze Training Status data from incompatible devices.

So all Connect+ features are good for those with Fenix 8 + Edge 840 but if you have anf Fenix 8 and Edge MTB or Instinct 1 with cut-off features, the Connect+ A.I. is not good for that too.

  • Are you reporting that you have tested this on an Edge MTB that you own, or is this speculation? I ask to make sure we look into this correctly on our end.

The description you provided of your Instinct 1 and Fenix 8 sounds as though something is not working as it should be. If you record an activity with an Instinct that has the underlying fitness information from a run for example, meaning pace, HR, distance, then this should apply towards the training metrics that are displayed on your fenix 8 after it has synced twice.

This is how this will work on an Edge MTB. While it does not natively support some of the added metrics and training data itself, after activities are synced to your account, and then through your Primary Training Device, these rides will impact that data across your account/support devices. Information on this can be found here

Some of those items will not be updated, such as Endurance Score and Hill Score, but the core Training features will be impacted by rides from the Edge MTB.
