Edge Explore 2 and Garmin Connect display all roads as paved!

Hi!

I've been using my Edge Explore 2 for a few months now. I'm lucky to live near a national park, so 95% of my MTB rides are on forest trails, with occasional few kilometers of gravel roads or tarmac to connect between trails. Yet Garmin Connect and the Edge Explore display 100% of my rides as 100% paved! Why? What is more frustrating is that I cant edit that part of the activity to correct what is clearly an error. Any ideas?

  • Yet Garmin Connect and the Edge Explore display 100% of my rides as 100% paved!

The Edge Explore 2 has 3 preset ride profiles, with "Road" being the default, I think. The type of ride depends on what profile you choose.

  • Hi. No, I’m using the “Offroad” profile and the activities are uploaded as “Gravel/unpaved road cycling”.

  • Oh, ok. I misunderstood. I checked one of my recent rides which was done on mixed surface. Garmin says it was 88% paved and 12% unpaved, which I think is incorrect as well (in reality there was more than 12% unpaved). Makes me wonder how garmin determines the type of surface.

  • Well, at least You have a mixed surface :)  I still haven’t been able to record any cycling activity that is not 100% paved roads.

  • There is a switch that turns map display of non-paved roads on or off, on the map screen swipe up from the bottom of the screen, there are 6 options to turn certain things on/off, the UnPaved Roads is the last at the bottom

  • Its on, these are my settings:

  • These are per activity profile settings, not global so ensure they are set as you need in the appropriate profile. As you say Garmin Connect (web) does not show paved/unpaved, you will have to view on another site (eg RWGPS, free version ok) which does distinguish the surface types, but the types should show on your EE2 if the profile settings are right and the maps are up-to-date Garmin maps, surface does not always show on non-garmin maps nor strangely with the source OSM site. The "surface" is part of the OSM road meta data and might not be set correctly for your local unpaved roads? Check you local roads on RWGPS to see how they are shown (using the "RWGPS Cycle" map type

  • Thank You for the detailed answer! Although that sounds like a lot of homework I should not be doing, this just feature should just work :-( And yes, I am using the "Offroad" profile 100% of the time, and yes, it is set up to display unpaved roads.

  • Ok, mystery solved! It turns out that in my country the local Garmin retailer makes his own local topographical map and preinstalls this map on most Garmin devices, where it is enabled by default. Its advertised as a much more detailed map, but the road labeling is definitely wrong! I've disabled the map and now, with just Garmin maps enabled, all my rides are accurately recorded as paved/unpaved.

Thank You for all who helped and provided detailed answers. I have a follow-up question - is it possible to somehow correct/edit previous rides with the surface type?
