I just bought the Explore 2 in prep for a couple months bikepacking in Japan. I previously used the Edge Touring for such trips but wanted to get a device that would be supported (and of course, a device that would be better). In order to get a map of Japan I set up the device with Garmin Explore and then downloaded/installed Garmin's geospatial map of Japan. However, after enabling it on my device, etc. I was surprised to find very limited map detail (so that I'd be able to find my way around towns as well as manage my journey in the countryside, as I was able to do with the Touring (and a Garmin SD map of the UK). Sooo...
Can you confirm that the map detail of Japan should be similar to that available on the map of, say, England? If it's not, then I'd like to know if I can install an OSM of Japan by dragging "gmapsupp.img" to the root of the device (/Garmin) as is instructed by countless Garmin cycling device users. (Note that I attempted this and enabled the map, but saw zero map when looking at Japan on my device. Do the other maps (such as the basemap of N. America) need to be disabled?
Any instruction would be deeply appreciated. I'd hate to be reliant on my cellphone, paper maps, and my instinct versus being able to simply glance down at my device.
Thanks!!
