How do I turn on GPS?

Somehow, GPS on my Edge Explore 2 has turned off.  I'm not sure if it's the update to version 21.16 or if it's my new cell phone that did it so would like some help please.
I found this for a Garmin watch:
How To Enable Phone GPS for an Activity Profile in the Garmin Connect Mobile App.

-Open the Garmin Connect app.
-Select More (bottom right).
-Scroll down and select Garmin Devices.
-Select your device.
-Select Activities (Activity Profiles in my case)
-Select the activity type.
-Toggle Phone GPS on
I go to Road but there is no "Toggle Phone GPS" on.   There is a "Satellite Systems" but when I hit it, nothing happens; it just stays off.

From the Explore owner's manual, I found this:
You can turn off GPS when you are training indoors or to save battery life.
-Select (the three bars)
-System
-GPS Mode.
However, when I go to System, there is no GPS mode.

I've tried a reset on the Explore 2 but that did not resolve the problem.

On my phone (Android), in the Connect App, all app permissions are set to allow except microphone.

Any thoughts on what I've missed would be most appreciated.

  • Swipe down on the main screen. Now you see PROFILE / SETTINGS / Battery charge indicator / GPS and more.
Tap GPS and you'll see three options. The GPS setting is for the currently active profile.

  • Thanks for your reply.  I see that, the three option of Balanced, Best Battery Life and Off.  How do I get that Off to change to On?  Tapping on it doesn't do anything, nor does holding it down for an extended period.  This is for the Road setting.  I've tried Off Road and get the same thing.

  • - If you tap 'OFF', you switch Off the GPS mode. The unit goes 1 screen back and you'll see the gps strength bars red-crossed.
    - If you tap 'Balanced...', you switch On the Balanced GPS mode. The unit goes 1 screen back and you'll see the gps strengths bars getting green, the more green bars, the better the gps receipt
    - If you tap 'Best Battery Life...', you switch On the Best Battery Life GPS mode. The unit goes 1 screen back and you'll see the gps strengths bars getting green, the more green bars, the better the gps receipt

Maybe you're confused because the three fields don't change after tapping and on the screen back you cannot see in which gps mode the unit is operating - you only see the 5 gps strengts bars. Red-crossed meand gps mode is Off, green bars mean gps mode is On.

  • That's the solution--Thanks so very much!
