Rerouting with Explore 2

There seems to have been quite a bit of discussion up until a year or so ago about the rerouting function on various Garmin devices.  I don't see anything recent so maybe it has been resolved.  But can anyone tell me what to expect on my Explore 2 currently?

It gives me the option to reoute automatically or be prompted and I have chosen to have it done automatically.  But my question:  when I go off course, will it route me back to where I left the course (I believe my old 800 did this and I didn't like it).  Or will it take me to the nearest point where I can rejoin the course (preferred), or (heaven forbid) will it redo the entire course to get me to the destination by what it thinks is the best route to the destination?

If anyone has recent experience with this I'd appreciate if you could share.  I'm about to leave on a long tour.

  • There is Course recalculation and there is Route recalculation. Both have their own independent settings. If you are cycling and deviate from your original course, you are in the 'Course recalculation' regime. If the regime calculates the way back to your course, it calculates a route. If you deviate again (before you are back on your own original course), you are in the 'Route recalculation' regime that will use the chosen settings for that.
My experience is that during cycling and under 'recalculation regime' it is not always clear 'who is the boss' and not very clear what and why is happening what is proposed as the way back to your own course.
Specially on long(er) rides I would advise tot hold the regime yourself and switch off as most automatic rerouting as possible. If you deviate, pause navigation and use the map to find your way back to the course at a point that feels logically for you. Then resume navigation and continue cycling your original course.

Here is the explanation about all recalculation options from the Garmin Beta Team:

Differences between Course and Route Recalculation
    Source: Garmin Beta team 2022-08-18

    Explanation of the differences:

A Course in Garmin’s language is a pre-planned ride. 3rd party platforms may call this a “Route” or something else. In contrast, a Route is what you get when you choose to navigate to a location on the device where the goal is to navigate you to a chosen location.

    • Course Recalculation - This impacts what happens when the user is using turn guidance while navigating a course, and they go off-course. The recalculation refers to the route to get back to the course. The options are:

              • Prompt with Auto Re-route: Will prompt the user with options, and will automatically select a route back to the course if the user does not select one within 10 seconds.

          • Prompt Only: Will prompt the user with options, and will wait for the user to select one.

          • Auto Re-route: Will automatically activate the most direct route back to the course.

      • Auto Pause: Will automatically pause turn guidance until the user gets back onto the course.

    • Route Recalculation - This impacts what happens when the user deviates from a route that is not associated with a user's pre-planned course. For example, they use turn guidance to navigate to a water stop, or they navigate back to the start of their activity. The difference is that the particular shape of the route is not important in this case - just the destination. The options are:

    • Prompted: If the user goes off of the prescribed route, the device will ask the user if they want to recalculate the route to the destination before doing so.

    • Automatic: If the user goes off of the prescribed route, the device will automatically readjust their route to get them from the new location to their chosen destination.

    • Off: The device will not recalculate the route if the user deviates from the originally prescribed route.
