1. Sure to have the Edge powered down completely and not put in Sleep mode?
2. Set GPS to 'Off' before powering down.
So it is necessary to turn off the GPS? I'm coming from using a Garmin 800 for 10+ years and didn't have to do that.
It'a tip that came up in this forum about the same issue. See: https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-explore-2/327430/battery-drain-still-present#pifragment-1290=2
I'm easyly used to switch the GPS Off before powerdown and never have battery issues. By the way, also never tested eventual battery drain while keeping GPS On and power down.
Are you on the latest firmware version 19.21? In the thread mentioned above it's been suggested that the issue has been solved in later software versions.
I never had any problem, in fact it holds the battery pretty well even when only put to sleep. But it's true that if you won't use it for a long time then you need to turn it off: long press the on/off button, then click power off on the screen
