Alert: Temperature to low. Backlight will be limited

How cold is it? The specs say that the operational temperature for the device cannot drop below -20 C (-4 F). If it's colder, then perhaps the device tries to tell you that you should stop using it, because the internal components can't take it. The operational temperature range is even more restrictive if you have a power source connected to the device.

It around -5 C.
The exact wording is: "temperature to low. backlight will be limited"
I suspect that it has something to do with the Varia Radar Tail Light.
But I can't find anything about it in the settings and on google.
The strange thing is, the message also appears with a bike profile that is not connected to the Varia Radar and has no data field installed for it.

I think the warning is that the temperature is low to affect the runtime of the Edge battery so the Edge is turning down the back light to help extend the battery run time.

My experience of this is it flashes up once, i tick it and then it goes.  does yours repeat ask?

Yes, that's exactly the problem.
Just one warning would be bearable, but unfortunately it keeps coming back.
When it's colder than 0C (32F), I wear thick gloves with which I can't operate the touchscreen. I then have to take them off while driving to switch off the message and after about 10 minutes it appears again. This then goes on and on.

@MatS Do you have a Varia Radar device?

I suspected that too, but my background light is set to 10% (lowest level) by default. In this context, the message makes no sense at all.

no i dont - just cadence sensors.  Ive had the alert pop up on mutiple rides, okay it once and never come back

I have exactly the same problem!

Since this winter my Edge 830 shows me this message on every cold day (but "backlight will be limited").
I have used the Edge 830 for years now, but before this winter I have never see this annoying message.
So there must have been be a firmware update which is responsible for this.

"Lightning will be limited" was just a translation error by me. I have the German version.
I have corrected it in my initial question so that it can be found by others using the search function.

Thx for the links. I am a little more reassured now because other users also have this problem.
I called Garmin Support and they had never heard of it and couldn't help me. They now want to pass the problem on to the development department.

Because the problem is new, I also suspect that there is a connection with the last recent firmware update 19.21.
The user is once again a beta tester for new and immature functions.
I have the latest firmware for my device. I hope something has changed with the next update. But winter could already be over by then.

I've also had the alert since this winter season. Unfortunately, I didn't pay attention to whether it came directly after the last update.
Yes, it's totally annoying and absolutely superfluous.

Actually, it's even dangerous, because Garmin draws my attention to a superfluous message. It takes me completely out of my driving flow and makes me worry about an artificial problem that doesn't exist. Garmin forces me to take off my gloves and take my hand off the handlebars while riding.  

Garmin please switch this off!
