What on earth is my Explore 2 syncing?

I bought an Edge Explore 2 to replace the failing Oregon 700 I'd been using for years. Generally I much prefer the Explore, however,  as soon as I'd save my ride in the Oregon, a notification would pop up saying that my ride was available to view on Connect and I'd turn the Oregon off.

With my Explore 2 it's currently taking around 5 - 10 minutes for this to happen and if I drill down through the menus to Phone it shows that it's syncing - but what? Surely all it needs to sync. is the last Activity which is generally around 250Kb (even if it's moving everything in the Activities folder this is only a smidgen over 3 Mbs.). By contrast if I plug the Explore 2 into my PC via usb, it syncs with Connect (through Garmin Express) in a matter of seconds.

Having to wait  for the Edge Explore to finish syncing. is a bit of a faff, but if I don't, the  Connect App on the phone won't automatically upload the new ride to Garmin Connect and I'll need to sync. via usb. What's going on?

  • It shouldn’t take that long. It might not be syncing anything. But it still may have to wade through all the data to determine whether it needs to be synced.

If you have 3GB of activities, it could be too many. It looks like the devices have a limit if 100 courses and 200 activities.

Note that it’s not intended to keep lots of activities on the devices.

  • Thanks for the reply Thumbsup

I'd be surprised if the unit ti too full, it only has a couple of months of rides on it and my Oregon would sync. in seconds with Garmin Connect via the phone App. despite having several years of rides stored.

By the same token the Explore 2 syncs. exactly the same data with Garmin Connect in seconds (literally) via Express on the PC, it's syncing with the phone App that's problematic.

I'll just mark it down as one of those things I think. Syncing by cable isn't much of a hardship.

    Thanks again.

  • If BT is being used for this, it could be why it’s slow.

    Wifi is faster.

I’m not sure if either of these have WiFi.

The different devices might use different approaches for syncing.

One approach might use “last date checked”. Another might check everything there (so not to miss anything).

    We might be missing something.

It doesn’t seem to be an issue people are having.

  • I’m not sure if either of these have WiFi.

Both the Edge Explore and the Explore 2 do not have WiFi

  • I have the same issue. I can walk to my office and connect to my computer via USB and be synced well before Bluetooth finishes with my phone. Since that also charges the unit I’ve lived with the inconvenience. But I would love a solution!

  • Same here... it never ends.

  • Do you have the latest map and firmware? It was the same for me the first time I synced it with Bluetooth. I suppose it was trying to update everything over Bluetooth, which would take forever. After I synced using a computer - with a USB cable - then subsequent syncing are very fast (probably only syncing the activity data).

  • The Edges don't update maps via Bluetooth.

  • No, but I suspect it may be the firmware. At least, once the update was done on USB it stopped syncing forever.

  • Same here... very annoying...(but it seems to be a bit faster since the last update)
