Garmin Edge Explore 2 Sensor update alert with failure to update

Following each ride, I receive a notice that I need to have a sensor update.   I click okay to download and install.  I am connected to my phone with Garmin Connect.  I see  a spinning circle with a number counting up, sometimes reaching 4 sometimes getting to 14 before I receive a message that download and installation failed.  I make sure my heartrate, speed, and cadence sensors remain awake and active (I even circle around the parking lot).   What am I doing wrong?
