My opinion on Edge Explore 2

I've used Garmin for a long time now, from Etrex Vista, Etrex 30, Foretrex 401, Oregon 700, Edge 130, and Fenix 6....but this Explore 2 has to be the biggest, most unreliable piece of garbage I've ever purchased! I know things will get better in time, but with 7.09 update to find device crashing randomly, unable to locate my position (while displaying full GPS lock-on), not to mention plethora of annoyances in the UI...

I know I've been dissapointed with Garmin before, but this is bulls***.
What looked like a device perfect for my needs, turned out to be crap.

There. It does feel nice to say it.

  •  I have reviewed crash reports for your device ID. I did not find any logs showing your device crashed going back to Nov 1st, 2022. Can you provide the Debugging folder from your Edge?

As for the battery life, what was the date of last time you experienced battery drain issue?

  • I'm pretty sure I haven't used the device since Nov 2022; it's winter here in Canada and I haven't required it for any extended rides. As far as battery issues, please refer to my other post  in this thread. Inadequate battery life has been a feature since I've bought the Explore, it's not necessarily a sign of malfunction.

  • After the Explore 1 I have used the Explore 2 since its introduction. So far I'm happy with the Explore 2 (10 to 12K per year, 95% road, 5% MTB).
    - I never have crashes
    - I never have reboots
    - Much longer battery life
    - No battery drain issues when powered down
    - No waiting for the calculation of the Course TBT's - they are calculated in the background and cached
    - Separated Course and Route recalculation options, including switching off recalculation completely
    - More accurate Course guidance TBT's - not too many, not too few
    - Yes, there are UI issues that can be improved like the visibility of the position cursor and more choices for color of the Course line
    - Yes, there is the annoying always returning dimmed Auto Pause screen with the huge pause icon masking the map or data screen when at Pause
    - Yes, give us editable Profiles, but in general I can live with the 3 fixed profiles
    - Yes, give us a choice to have the direction chevrons on the Course or not
    - Yes, give us the option to invert the riding direction when creating a new Course from a stored activity (History)
    - ..
    - ..

One cannot expect to have the Explore 2 behave as a cheap 1040 - marketing...Money mouth

  • I don't agree. It's stable, easy to use (once you've slimmed down the system to your needs) and overall a big improvement to the EE1. I bought it for the tons of good reviews it got - and, apart from minor issues (backlight at road turns), I find them correct.

  •  I see. So you are commenting on your experience from over 4 months ago. We have had two updates since that time. Please let me know if you experience battery life issues after warm weather returns to Canada.

  • I'm not sure you do understand. Refer to my initial comment in this thread you'll see I state I'm commenting on my problems with the original Edge Explore and am here because I'm considering the Explore 2. I don't own and have never used an Explore 2.

  • - I am sorry for the misunderstanding. I can tell you that of the reports of battery drain that I have fielded on all of our Edge devices, most battery drain issues are user induced by the selection changes made in the display menu. There are other factors but when you use no timeout and 100% brightness, this will greatly impact your battery life.

    Hi

I've come to Explore 2 from a background of the old 705 (back n 2008) the 800, the 1000 and the Explore 1 (which I returned immediately.) I've used the Explore 2 ever since it came out here is Australia. Was that a year ago? Anyway I ride 3-4 times a week. No problems. I preferred the grade on my 1000, but the lag on the Explore doesn't bother me now, The battery level indicator has been unreliable. At the start of a ride, it might show 70% and then gradually climb to 100% by the end of the ride! Weird, but has not done that for a few months. Maybe with the latest 8.06 it will be better. Time will tell. On all my Garmin Edge devices, I have never switched them off - I've just put them to sleep. Strangely, the battery level seems to fall more overnight when asleep that it does on a ride. On a typical 3 hour ride, the battery level indicator shows less than 5% an hour (but is the indicator accurate?). Overall, definitely the best Edge I have owned. I agree with many here that there are improvements that could easily be made, but I fear that the programmers are not necessarily cyclists and are not getting good advice from their managers - who are also probably not cyclists :(

  • @schoenberg, we do agree completely! I suppose your reaction is to the message of Medomish or linguinee?

  • we do agree completely!

    How many personalities are you?
And i personally don't count myself among your we's. ;)
