Maps only available via Garmin Express?

I bought the Edge Explore half a year ago when I was in Europe. I use it ever since at home (not in Europe). But until now I only had a Linux machine so I only used it with Garmin Connect Android. Now I connected it to a Mac and I am a bit shocked to discover that I can have now maps for my region. This is a nice surprise but why there isn't a way to download the map without the need for a Mac or a Windows machine?

Yeah, and judging from the multiple nights it took to upload the FW upgrade via BT i understand why it's not an option, but there could've been some mentioning of the possibility. Maybe i would then connect it to a friend's computer where GE can run in order to download the map to my region.
