Turn-by-turn navigation: Backlight doesn't go on

Something my Edge Explore 1 always did reliably. Now it beeps, but the display remains without backlight (unless constantly turned on). Am I missing something in the settings?

The problem is known and since the beginning a bug or just bad Sofware design.
I was hopeful that GARMIN would fix the problem with an update before winter (dark season) but unfortunately no.
Very disappointing…
