Screen lock-up fixed in Edge Explore 2?

I'm considering to upgrade from Edge Explore to Edge Explore 2. Main reason the screen lock-ups when using battery save mode. Has this issue been fixed in the Edge Explore 2 ?

  • Hey,

How to repro this issue? I haven`t experienced anything like this so far.

  • Hi, the issue is very common on the Edge Explore (1) : When riding a track -either uploaded to the device or a go-to destination route- the screen locks up while the Garmin is in battery-save mode. Only solution is to switch off the device completely by holding the power off button for about 10 sec. Then it restarts. Actually the only flaw on the Edge Explore, but it's a real pain. The issue never appears in normal mode. Possible workaround is to use a USB powerbank while riding and not use the battery save mode. Look around on various forums, many users having the same issue.

I was just curious if Garmin had fixed this because I don't read anything here about it anymore.

  • To give a more precise answer to your question: I cannot reproduce it on command, but use the bat. save mode and you will see it happens so once every 10-20 km. Especially when the processor is busy doing it's job. E.g. when many route instructions follow up in a short period of time. (that at least is my subjective observation)

  • I use Explore 2 mostly in battery-saver mode and haven`t experienced it so far.

    Please note that:

-I haven`t ridden a single preplanned course using Explore 2 longer than 80 kilometers for 4-5 hours

-I have total of around 500km and 20 hours with Explore 2.

Taking all above into consideration, I would assume that this issue is not present on Explore 2.

You can always get Explore 2 from an online store which allows free returns with refunds and double check it for yourself.

  • You should have noticed it by then. Thanks! Sounds like it's been resolved.

  • Corroborating the problem with Explore 1. By default I use the Explore 1 in Bat Save mode, typically 100KM (pre-planned) courses with turn-by-turn guidance enabled, and the unit is good for at least 1 crash or freeze a day. I don't know which it is because the display is usually off (due to Bat Save mode) but either way a reboot is required.

I'm not sure if this is a rule but I notice that splitting rides into multiple courses seems to decrease crashes. Say, separate courses for going to a destination and another for the return leg.
