Phantom button and screen presses causing odd behavior

My EE2 will sometimes start or stop a trip automatically as if the lower right side button is pressed. Sometimes this occurs rapidly, over and over again, starting and stopping a trip repeatedly.

Also, while map is displayed but not actively navigating, the map will zoom in, or out on its own. This is with auto-zoom turned off for both riding profiles. I'll set zoom level to desired map size, where a minute or so later the map will be way zoomed in, or way zoomed out.

Have also had odd lockups where no button presses / length of presses will wake the device. Plugging into power would also no wake the device, nor show charging display.

Anyone else having these issues? You think it's defective hardware, or defective software?

  • I would call your local Garmin Support. The zoom issue is a known issue on 1040 so likely also EE2 (same base software) and was corrected in the recent 1040 version 14.20 release so likely coming to EE2 sometime.

Everything else sounds like hardware issues and may need a device replacement under warranty thus call support.

  • Not good to see shoddy beta software on new devices. I’ve only had the EE2 for 2 weeks, the issues I’m experiencing make it mostly unusable due to annoyance. Thinking I’ll just return the Edge Explore 2 and go back to using my trusted GPSMAP 64S that’s been thru hell & back over the past 9 years without a single hiccup or annoyance.

  • I had the same problem during I was trying to upgrade the FW. Customer support told me that it can be caused by "GPS drift" and what they recommended did fix it. So if you're indoors and "playing" with the device (or just have it on the table untouched) then switch it to indoor cycling profile, that turns off the GPS. When the GPS is on it sometimes gets some signal and that causes it to think you're moving (and I guess some default settings tells the device to aut-start an activity)

  • Same!! the map zooms out every time i zoom in on purpose to be able to follow the road and turns better because they can be a PITA to see, it then automatically zooms out again SO annoying!

  • Returning the Edge Explore 2. It's locked up completely several times in the last few days, requiring that I hold all 3 buttons to force reboot it.

Really too bad, as it's a perfectly priced & featured device for my casual riding needs. Hopefully Garmin puts some more dev resources on this product to get the bugs all worked out.
