Worth the upgrade?

Hello (First post on this section:-)), I have a Garmin edge explore and looking at the spec I am wondering if it is worth the upgrade to EE2?  I can see battery improvement but what other tangible improvements should make me switch?

Many thanks,

Michael.

  • You can also rename your Hyundai to a Porsche, and put the sport seats in it.
    It remains a Hyundai.
Okay, some who are not familiar with it, think it's a Porsche after that. ;)

Joking aside, renaming the name and changing the data pages does not change the Activity Profile as it is processed and stored in Garmin Connect.
    That's the point.

  • It must be me but I don't understand what you're trying to achieve, I have 2 Activity Profiles set up that I use, Road and Gravel and Garmin Connect saves them as different rides, Road Cycling and Gravel/Unpaved Cycling, I can search within Connect for Road or Gravel and they come up as 2 separate lists.

Under the name of each activity in the activity list on GC it says what type of activity it is, you can change the type from the drop down menu, if you wish. So if for instance if I started a Road ride on the EE2 but it was actually a Gravel ride I can change it after the fact on GC once uploaded.

  • I have 2 Activity Profiles set up that I use, Road and Gravel and Garmin Connect saves them as different rides,

Just because you use the existing profiles doesn't mean others have to do the same.

I don't ride a road bike or an gravel bike. I ride a normal bike on normal streets in normal touring way every day and several times. I don't feel like manually changing the activity on GC to normal cycling every time.

I also want to use the device for hiking and set up a profile hiking. The offered routing method "Hiking" is explicitly offered by the device.
I can, for example then use indoor as hiking and have a bicycle as a logo and Gamin Connect saves my hike under indoor cycling that I always have to correct after each hike. You find that user-friendly?

Just be happy it works for you. But there are users who want to use the device differently than prescribed and would like to set up and use the 3 Profiles as they see fit.

  • So you're getting upset that a Cycle computer wont let you set a hiking activity, I don't think the EE2 is for you.

You may have to read more slowly and concentrate more.

Why do you read over something like that? What is not to understand about it?
Why don't you read the posts of other users carefully first?

That is written quite clearly: The user Higrunner, like me by the way, simply wants to ride a bike (on a normal road under normal conditions) and not a road bike or gravel/offroad bike.
But there is no activity profile for cycling. But there was one with the previous Explore version.
You can no longer set up an activity profile cycling, only the special activity profiles gravel/offroad, road & indoor which are fixed.
These are special profiles for special cycling activities and not for normal cycling.
DC Rainmaker also criticizes this and other users. Please also note the German forum.

So you're getting upset that a Cycle computer wont let you set a hiking activity,

The user only made just an example for your clarification. It was obviously an example what explains most simply and makes the importance of activity profiles especially clear. But it obviously didn't help and unfortunately you didn't even understand that. That is unfortunate.

This kind of inappropriate and provocative argumentaion does not help, rather the opposite.
Please read posts carefully. Thank you

For me, the new Edge Explore 2 with its many bugs and forced activity profiles is a disappointment and not an upgrade recommendation.

  • Isn't there a misunderstanding that the ROAD profile is meant for ALL types and kind of bikes that use roads to navigate. If you need separated administration of your activities for your city bike, road race bike, E-bike or whatever bike, hate to classify your activities afterwards in GC, and knowing that the Edge Explore 2 has only three fixed activity profiles - remember, the Explore 1 has only one - you have to my opinion choosen the wrong device.

  • I can, for example then use indoor as hiking and have a bicycle as a logo and Gamin Connect saves my hike under indoor cycling that I always have to correct after each hike. You find that user-friendly?

    Exactly, thanks!

  • For me, the new Edge Explore 2 is not a disappointment al all. I like the three profiles - it fits perfectly with my activities on the race bike, mountainbike and on the Tacx trainer indoor - , the caching of the Turn Guidance events, preventing you have to wait for minutes-long calculation time before Course start, the much, much improved battery life compared to the Explore 1, the broad range of sensors that are supported, including Smart Trainer, etc.

Of course I know that some flaws are still present, but that's not unusual for new devices.

  • If you need separated administration of your activities

The separted administration of my activities I do not need, but it is already fixed preset by Garmin.
My normal bike does not fit to offroad/gravel, road or indoor profile.

the Explore 1 has only one

which one could change however also after its desires in real. You could also change the activity profile! Now with the Explore 2 this is no longer possible. That is the crucial difference. I had the old device for almost 4 years.
