Garmin completely mis-identifying training effect

Hi,

My Edge 850 (and then Garmin Connect) consistently comes up with the wrong categorization of the training impact of my rides when I do VO2 Max intervals. This should be easy for the Garmin to see since each interval is a marked lap and they are all 3-5 minutes at 120-130% of FTP. The Edge calls these tempo rides, which is the zone for the average power for the ride. Any idea why the Garmin is not recognizing the true nature of the ride? The other training software I use that imports the same data from Garmin Connect correctly identifies the ride type.

  • Check in Garmin Connect or on your device your HRmax is correct (and 'Auto Detect Max' is turned off).  Auto Detect Max is on by default and a flapping jersy or poor HRM contact can cause a ridiculously high HRmax which in turn scrambles zones, Garmin Connect training impacts and recovery times.  Auto Detect Max seems to turn back on with firmware updates.  Sorry if that's not the cause of your problem.
