850 and the dreaded Daily Suggested Workouts!

This topic has been brought and discussed ad nauseam, since we don't know when. But many brought the issue about these DSW taking up unnecessary screen real estate. We're assuming that this is the same on the 850??!!! Has anyone been blessed enough to find out how to get rid of this?

Toggling on "do not show on home screen" or "pause training" and other buttons is futile... Please keep us informed if this "feature" could be truly modified any time soon.

Thanks.

  • +1. Agree with this -- needs to be fixed so that "do not show on home screen" works properly and it shouldn't take up space on the home screen.

  • +1  needs to be fixed so it doesn't still take up space on the home screen.

  • I just bought an 850 and have been trying to get rid of this useless box from the home screen, but as you say, disabling it via the recognized method does not work. I hope Garmin can fix this bug soon. It is very annoying to have something taking up so much space on the home screen, which I will never use.

  • Just wondering.... What would people want on their home screen i instead of this box?

As an aging and habitual over trainer the algorithm's suggestion of 'rest day' isn't a bad thing. If a new course is sent to the device that  box has the 'latest course added' right there and that's perfect when I turn it on next time as I'll almost always be going to do that course right then. Swiping the suggestion box can bring up the last activity stats and that can be useful.

So given that Garmin can't be expected to make all the people happy all the time, how better to use this real-estate?

  • I don't know the demographics of Garmin's userbase, but I know for my part, I don't want to use my GPS for "training". I know that is what many people buy it for, but that's just not me. I just want to go for bike rides, and occasionally bike tour. As such I have zero interest in anything related to a "daily suggested workout". I would be happy, in fact, if the thing just defaulted to having the map as the home screen, as it used to do the last time I bought one of these units (way back, it was an eTrex Vista HCx, and it just came up with the map, which was intuitive to me, given that it's a GPS). The focus on "training" seems to have taken these units away from me, I had to figure out how to get it to just show the map (Navigation -> Browse map), as if that was some kind of not-very-common thing that I want to do, rather than the main reason I got the thing.

So, it would be nice if we had options, and particularly, if those options actually worked. In this case, there is an actual option to disable having the Suggested Daily Workout on the Home screen, and it doesn't work. I think that is particularly annoying, but in general I would be happy if I could have more control rather than less, and be able to just put the map up as the home screen, with some way to get the menu, and skip all the training stuff, that would be great.

  • I ride with some who are very happy with Explorer 2 as it's a solid navigator and activity recorder, has excellent battery life and none of the training faff that they don't need. Much cheaper too.

  • Use the Garmin Connect app on your smartphone. Select your device in the top right of the screen. Select Edge 850, and finally select “Glances”. Now you can remove that pesky Garmin Coach you don’t want Slight smile
