850 powers on while charging

So I know this has been asked before but I have noticed the edge 850 powers on when changing. While I appreciate this is a behaviour designed in by Garmin and we can turn it off I have to ask the following:

is this detrimental to the screen ie long term static images causing retention?  If so who is responsible? I leave my device on charge pretty much every day as I ride 5-6 days per week. 

And secondly is there a screen sleep setting? I really don’t want my hall cabinet glowing every night.

    According to Garmin, that’s the expected behavior. It’s the same with my 1050. While charging, press the power button and the screen will turn off. Press power button again and the screen will get back up.

    Has anyone tried a 'data blocker' charge only USB C cable and see if charging can be done without powering on the unit?  I believe the unit senses a data cable and automatically wakes up.  It would be nice if we could change the unit's behavior by using a different type of cable.

    It happens in every Garmin bike computer released in last years, maybe ever. Only response we are getting from Garmin is "it was designed to do so, it's a feature not a bug" but no one knows (or can explain) why it was designed to do so all this years ago and in what crazy circumstances it is advantageous to the user. If you want to make this more annoying then you are lucky because they have developed a new feature recently in Varia radars and connected lights department. They not always go to sleep with the device. This way you can plug the Edge to the charger, it will wake up, it will wake up the lights and then you have multiple blinking devices in multiple places you have to check and manually turn off to make sure the don't drain battery when Edge is charging.

    Oh no I most definitely have this issue. This is why I leave it plugged in. The radar wakes up and if not plugged in the battery drains on the head unit. I was just trying to keep to one issue here

    Combination issues are the best. You ignore one bug for years pretending that its a feature so long that you start to believe in it yourself and then second one is dropping in.
