850 Battery Life - OUCH!

The 850 has a great new display like 1050... but battery life is only 12 hours... Less than 1/2 that of a 840.

GARMIN WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?  Please explain yourself.

  • The battery is replaceable.

DC Rainmaker also said Garmin keeps making the prior version for a while.

  • Hard pass for the 850 for me. This battery life is a HUGE disappointment.

  • The 840 is still available on the Garmin USA website under "Previous Models."  www.garmin.com/.../

  • Did a 3h indoor Zwift ride yesterday. GPS off w. HR, PWM, SPD, Di2 sensor active.

Turned down brightness to 0% and screen is still very viewable indoor.

Battery burn = 6% (97-91%)...! Or should I say 2% pr. hour - equaling 50h burntime in theory!

Maybe it's a fluke. I have now turned up brightness to 10% Let's see on next indoor ride...

  • Hi! So what would you say, what´s the battery life with the 50% brightness setting and what would it be with e.g 20-30%? I have an Edge 530 which I used at 20% brightness from the beggining to maximize battery life as I ride Audax (anything betwen 200 and 1200km) and I was fine with that. I was waiting for the 850 to replace the old 530, but seeing the 10-12 hour battery life figures, I might go for the 840…

  • For your Audax I think you should use the 840 solar or buy the 850 and the battery pack from Garmin. Battery Pack will only work with compatible mount.

  • Right, I am using a Garmin power pack already as my 5 year old edge530 lost approx. 50% of it´s initial capacity. However, it’s probably still better or the same as the advertised 10-12 hours of the new Edge850 which is a bummer, hence I am tending towards the 840… I was just wondering what would be the battery life of the 850 if brightness is at let´s say 20% all the time.

  • A current discussion in the 840 forum suggests the “solar” benefit is very marginal and not worth the additional cost and the slightly dimmer screen due to the solar overlay.

The 850’s 10-12 hours is likely the best you would see and downhill from there?

interesting you say your 530 has lost half its capacity , my 5 year old 530 can still last 40 hours on an Audax (backup for my 1040), with some fairly aggressive manual setting to save battery (not battery save mode) and my 3 year old non-solar 1040 still gives me 85-95 hours with the save settings, x50 will never see anything like that. I do carry a smaller size powerbank and do have a dynamo hub for the lights and usb power if needed.

  • I recently sold my 840 due to the text and numbers difficult to read at times. Do you think the 850 is better visually than the 840 ?

Im not that concerned about the battery times, 10/12 hours is more that enough for me. I also like the fact you can replace the battery yourself .

  • I can see I am more of an edge case, but this battery life absolutely kills the idea of an 850 for me. It sounds like it won't even last for a significant proportion of my day trips, let alone longer excursions. I've seen a lot of comments suggesting an external battery pack is the answer, but that misses the fundamental point that the consumption is high. For a significant multi-day ride I run a dynamo and it is usually enough to charge my computer and other electronics through the day, and run lights at night, meaning I don't need to stop anywhere to charge. If the computer has higher consumption though suddenly the dynamo might not be enough, and I'm not just carrying one external battery, I'm carrying multiples.

Very much hoping to see an Edge 850 Solar coming out soon, but not holding my breath.
