Edge 840 - never been able to get a GPS signal.

Got the device 18 months ago, due to moving and broken bones havent had a chance to really try but each attempt over that time (ever few monts) the GPS has never connected, I have attempted reboots, ran updates , rest the device multiple times synced and even tried beta software, tried diffrent GPS options nothing seams to work my old Edge 500 on the other hand seams to be fine still.

IDK, but i sure sounds like it's defective. A factory reset will have the GPS turned on and syncing/updating via Garmin Express should ensure GPS data is up to date. It can take some time for an initial fix to be found, especially if you moved a long distance, but anymore that happens reasonably quickly, just a few minutes at most. You might see what Garmin Support says.

go into menu - system - about - copyright , what is the firmware number of the GNSS (GPS) chipset? 16.01 , older or 0.00? below it, the Ephemeris file (CPE) is Current or Missing?

You may have a broken antenna. If you talk nicely to Garmin support they have been known to repair items outside of warranty in exceptional circumstances.
